State closing two area tag offices

North Carolina License Plate Agency locations in Asheville and Canton are closing Friday when their contracts end. The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is reviewing applications for new operators in both locales.

After 20 years, David Sharpton is retiring and closing out his contract with the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles for the Hendersonville Road License Plate Agency in Asheville.
The Canton license plate agency located on Champion Drive is also closing when its operator's contract expires.
Both tag offices will close at the end of business on Friday.
The DMV is reviewing applications to choose the operators and locations of the new license plate agencies. Routinely, it takes about four months to establish a new agency. Sharpton has held the contract for the Hendersonville Road agency since May 1994.
LPAs offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations. Currently, about 120 license plate agencies operate across North Carolina.
