Bethel Allean "Betty" Smith, 85

Bethel Allean "Betty" Smith, 85, of Fruitland passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at the Elizabeth House.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie James Hall and Aldamae Banks Hall, her husband, Clyde W. Smith, two brothers, Jack and Robert Hall and two sisters, Fanny Cantrell and Martha Morris.

Betty retired from J.P Stephens after 30 years of service and had also worked at Mountain Top Sewing and the Hampton Inn. She was a member of the First Church of The Nazarene.

She is survived by her care-giver and niece, Elizabeth Cantrell of Fruitland; a daughter, Judy Smith Mintz of Flat Rock; a son, Clyde Anthony Smith (Konda) of Flat Rock; two brothers, Ralph Hall (Doris) of Flat Rock and William Hall (Nancy) of Washington State; four grandchildren, Donna Heaton, Thomas E. Dills II (Lisa), Austin Smith and Anthony Smith Jr.; four great grandchildren, Michelle, Carlos II, Michael and Carmen; six great-great grandchildren, Dezanyia, Destiny, Eliah, Jacob, Carlos III and Naddia and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at the First Church of The Nazarene with Rev. Sherman Waters officiating.

Kristen Simmons

Kristen Simmons

Kristen Simmons passed away peacefully on August 18, 2014, at Four Seasons Hospice with her husband Samuel and parents close by.

Kristen was born in Elgin, IL, graduated from high school in Williamsport, Pa., and received her B.S. from the Syracuse University College of Nursing in 1996. After an internship in NICU at SUNY Syracuse, her work as a traveling nurse took her to Madison, Wisc.; Johns Hopkins; Seattle Children's Hospital; Albuquerque, NM; and finally to NICU in Greenville, SC. She worked in NICU and then Vascular Surgery at Mission Hospital in Asheville for about ten years. Kristen was passionate about children and her professionalism as a nurse.

Her enthusiasm for the outdoors led Kristen into Native American tracking and outdoor survival skills, backpacking, camping, and kayaking. She worked as a counselor-guide in a wilderness survival program for at-risk teenagers. She and her husband, Samuel Ray Simmons, met as kayakers and married on May 20, 2006, sharing a great love of

adventure and the out of doors.

Kristen has imparted her joy for life and her love of books, music, yoga, knitting, kayaking, and out-of-doors
adventure to her daughter Lily, now 10 years old, a beginning kayaker and violinist.

Kristen is survived by her husband Samuel Ray Simmons and their daughter Lily Marie, her parents, Susan and Arnold Andresen of Brevard, along with her aunts and cousins.

Her friends will forever remember her fierce courage, her inquiring spirit, and her dedication to her daughter and husband.

A memorial celebration of Kristen's life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at St. Philip's Episcopal Church at 256 E. Main St., Brevard.

Rosa Elizabeth Newman Rowe, 102

Rosa Elizabeth Newman Rowe, 102, of Hendersonville passed away Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at the Elizabeth House.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Coatsworth Newman and Dovie Justus Newman; her husband, Robert Rowe; a daughter, Alice Jones; a sister, Ethel Mason Lynn and a brother, Leonard Newman.

She and her husband loved to travel and go camping. She enjoyed her vegetable garden and had been a faithful member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church since 1953.

She is survived by two sons, David Coatsworth Rowe (Barbara) of Columbus, and Edward Lee Rowe (Susan) of Hendersonville; two daughters, Cathy Wilkie (Gene) of Mtn. Home, and Betty Adams (Dennis) of Hendersonville; 14 grandchildren, Fred, Archie, Lisa, Jeff, Bryce, Holly, Heidi, Bonnie, Becky, David Jr, Deborah, Curtis, Jonathan and Allen; 27 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at the Fletcher Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Marc Swearingen officiating. Her body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service in the church. A private burial will follow in the Dunlap Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson Funeral Service.

Mildred Omega Kelly Garey, 98

Mildred Omega Kelly Garey, 98

Mildred Omega Kelly Garey, 98, of Hendersonville passed away to her rest Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at her residence.

A longtime resident of Mountain Home, Mildred was born June 3, 1916, in Carroll County, Tenn., to the late John William Kelly and Mary Leona Brown Kelly. She was a 1935 graduate of Milan High School in Milan, Tenn. She later married the late James Elmo Garey on Dec. 26, 1936.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son Jimmie Kelly Garey, a grandson James Douglas Garey, a sister Vennie Mae Port and a brother Hubert Kelly.

In 1952, Mildred and James, moved to Western North Carolina to be close to family and to have the opportunity to provide their children a Christian education. Mildred was a homemaker, and in addition to raising her children, she helped her husband through the years with bookkeeping and running errands for their family owned business. She was an active member in the Hendersonville Seventh-day Adventist Church and later the Fletcher Seventh-day Adventist Church. She also volunteered at the Fletcher Hospital, now Park Ridge Hospital and served as a member of the auxiliary board.

She is survived by her two daughters Mary Garey Orr of Overland Park, Kan., Delphia Garey Hyams and her husband Butch of Asheville and a son Charles Garey of Mt. Home. Other survivors include eight grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be heldat 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at the Fletcher Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1141 Howard Gap Road, officiated by Pastor Brent Sedgwick. Entombment will follow at the Mausoleum of Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home.

June M. Anderson, 82

June M. Anderson, 82, of Hendersonville died at The Elizabeth House on Aug. 13, 2014.

She was born June 22, 1932, in Evanston, Ill., to the late Gilbert B. and Hazel Wagner Seehausen.

She attended Northwestern University and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in speech therapy. She married Ronald D. Anderson on July 6, 1957 in Chicago.

She had a full and adventurous life living with her family overseas in London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Amsterdam for 13 years, and traveled to 85 countries. She raised her family with love and understanding, influencing them by the way she lived her life.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years Ronald Anderson; her two sons Russell and his wife Lori Anderson, Roger and his wife Tracey Anderson; and daughter Julie and and her husband Glenn Gass; other survivors include five grandsons and two granddaughters. They provided her with pure joy. She will be in her family's hearts forever.

Alma Rhodes Ballard, 85, of Horse Shoe passed away Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at her home.

Born in Saluda, she was a daughter of the late Harrison Reece Rhodes, Sr. and Noda Pace Rhodes. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Alvin Ballard; two brothers, Lindsey Rhodes and Grayson Rhodes; three sisters, Agnes Ballard (her twin), Altas Collins and Ader Babb and a son, Hilliard Lee Ballard.

She is survived by her daughter, Gail Brooks and her husband Don of Six Mile, S.C.; a grandson, Barry Brooks of Horse Shoe; one sister, Mary Ann Murr of Moshiem, Tenn.; two brothers, Harrison Rhodes, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Saluda and Hilliard Rhodes of East Flat Rock.

A funeral service was held on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014.

Mary Elizabeth Prewett Stepp Jones, 93

Mary Elizabeth Prewett Stepp Jones, 93, of Hendersonville passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at her home in Edneyville.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Julian and Susan Gibbs Prewett, her husbands, Fate Jones and Clarence A. Stepp Sr., the father of her 8 children, a son, Robert Stepp, two brothers, John C. and Arden Prewett, two sisters, Flora Revels and Ruth Pike.

She retired from Ruth Originals after 26 years of service and Quality Sew after 10 years of service.

She is survived by two sons, Clarence A. Stepp Jr. and Havis D. Stepp, both of Hendersonville; five daughters, Cynthia Jones (Leo) and Eugenia Stepp both of Hendersonville, Dixie Case (Frank) of Canton, Ga., Gail Owen (Howard) of Mills River, Judy Thalman (Gary) of Harrisburg, 105 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at the Chapel In The Pines of Jackson Funeral Service with Rev. John Saunders officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel.

Jean Berry, 96

Jean Berry, 96, of Hendersonville passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at Carolina Village Care Center.

Jean was born on Dec. 14, 1917 in Urbana, Ill. She was the daughter of the late Louis Dale and Hazel Westerman Wilson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Clyde M. Berry, whom she married in 1940.

Jean was a graduate summa cum laude of the University of Illinois, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. For many years she transcribed books into braille for the blind and supported numerous young people through scholarships and other support. She wrote beautiful, thoughtful and wise stories and essays.

She is survived by her son, Kent Berry of Chapel Hill; two daughters, Dr. Jesse Joad and spouse Dr. Ann Bonham of Washington DC, and Lynn Berry and husband Howard Goldberg of Seattle, WA; three grandchildren, Zoria, Lisa, and David Berry; and former daughter-in-law, Susan Berry.

She will be missed by all who knew her for her kind gentle spirit, generous wisdom and sense of humor.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jean and her family are especially grateful to Tracy Holz and the staff and workers at Carolina Village for their professional support, friendship, and loving care.

John Fredrick Martin, 65

John Fredrick Martin, 65, of Hendersonville went to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014 at the Elizabeth House.

Mr. Martin was born Jan. 2, 1949, in Durham to the late Courtney Eugene Martin and Jean Barbara Gupton Martin. In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jane Martin.

A strong Christian, John had a heart after the Lord. He was a loving father, brother and friend. He was a sweet, generous man that touched the hearts of anyone that he came into contact. He resided in Hendersonville for over 30 years, serving his community with gorgeous home décor shops. He was the former owner and operator of Floral Décor in the downtown Main Street of Hendersonville from 2001 to 2011.

He is survived by his daughter Tessa Jane Martin of Hendersonville, a son Kristopher John Martin of Asheville, a brother Courtney Martin, Jr. of Tigerville, S.C., two sisters Margaret Corbin and Barbara Mize, both of Panama City, Fla. Other survivors include a granddaughter Kenna Jane Aldridge.

A memorial service will be held 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, in the Chapel of First Baptist Church with Rev. Wally Shamburger officiating.

Cindy Collins Ware, 52, of Hendersonville passed away at her home Tuesday, July 29, 2014.

A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, Cindy was the daughter of the late William Franklin Collins and Margaret Fowler Collins. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ronnie and Don Collins.

Cindy was a seamstress at Diamond Brand and loved cooking and sewing. An avid drag racing fan, she enjoyed working as a part of the crew with her brother. She also loved animals, especially her cats. Cindy was a member of Fruitland United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her loving husband of 14 years, Gary Ware of Hendersonville; daughter, Hannah Ware of the home; brother, Ricky and his wife, Dee, and their son, Matt, all of Hendersonville; sister-in-law, Pat Collins of Hendersonville; and a number of extended family members .

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at Fruitland United Methodist Church. Reverend Steve Jones will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

Amanda Liliha Pruitt, 32

Amanda Liliha Pruitt, 32, of Hendersonville passed away unexpectedly July 12, 2014, at her home. She was called home.

Amanda was preceded in death by Wayne Pruitt, Sr., Joe Pruitt, Debbie P. Sutton, Ruth Pike, Hettie Green, Albert Green, Joe Green and Diana Green.

Survivors include her mother, Rosemary (Mary) Pruitt; sister, Shannon Perez and husband, Raul; three sons she loved very much, Tony, Brian and Cody; her grandmother, Thelma P. Coggins; uncle, Wayne J. Pruitt, Jr.; aunt, Trish Halbert and husband, Tony; two nieces, Kayla and Natalia; two nephews, Victor and Joe Joe; cousins, Robert, Mario, Cory, Chris, Heather and other extended family members and friends. She also leaves her two best friends, Amber Bryant and Crystal Baldwin.

Amanda loved everyone and was always smiling. She also loved her dogs. Amanda will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. "I love my daughter with all my heart."

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m .Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at Shuler Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Amanda's mother.

Terry Massingill Hoglen, 57, of Hendersonville died Sunday, August 3, 2014 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.

Born in Kingsport, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late William C. Massingill and Wilma M. Howell.

Terry enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with her family. She had such a compassionate soul and reached out to those in need. She was a friend to anyone she met. Terry will be greatly missed by family and friends. She was of the Christian faith.

Terry is survived by her husband, Mark Hoglen of Hendersonville; daughter, Monica Embler and husband, Michael, of Candler; grandchildren, Tyler Paul and wife, Emily, Nolan Embler and wife, Krystal; and Alex Embler; great-grandchildren, Laura, Connor, Kaden, Braidon, Mason, Landon, Dillon and Kayla; sister, Carol M. Dunn and husband, Allen, of Candler; brother, William C. Massingill II of Knoxville, Te.nn; Daniel Paul whom she considered a son; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. Pastor Donna Hall will officiate.

James Grady Heatherly, Sr., 82

James Grady Heatherly, Sr., 82, a lifelong resident of Hendersonville, went home to be with His Savior on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, after a long fought battle with cancer.

He was a son of Henry Grady and Vernia Babb Heatherly.

James was an outstanding basketball player for Flat Rock High School, where he graduated in 1951. He served in the US Army. He retired from Olin/Ecusta after 35 years, without missing a day of work. He was a master gardener, part-time beachcomber, and a professional "Papaw." He was a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church and a member of the Bread of Life Sunday School class. James will be missed for his wonderful sense of humor and his enthusiastic love for life.

He was married to his beautiful wife of 63 years, Ruth Turbeville Heatherly, also of Hendersonville. His three children are Lynn Cooper (Jeff), Jamey Heatherly (Anita), and Lora Molton (Bryan), all of Hendersonville. He was the beloved "Papaw" to Lane, Marci, Tonya, Kerra, Tiffany, Jay, Amanda, Matthew, Mickey, and Greg, 10 great grandchildren and 7 grandchildren in-laws, whom he adored. Born a child into a family of twelve children, he has three surviving sisters: Sarah Dore, Catherine Schroader, and Mary Jones, along with many nieces and nephews that loved him.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

George E. Veen, 91

George E. Veen, 91, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.

George was a longtime resident of the Almaden Valley in San Jose, Calif., and moved to Hendersonville in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents and only sibling, Anita Veen Procci.

George grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School. He served in the Army of the United States during World War II. Following his service, he graduated summa cum laude from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC,with a degree in aeronautical engineering. A 37-year career with General Electric ended with retirement in 1989. George also received a masters degree in Mechanics from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Goggins Veen, his son Brian of San Francisco, CA, and his daughter Anne Veen-Sitter and her husband David of Hollister, CA. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Martin Schratz officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
