Wayne Charles Lingel, 83

Wayne Charles Lingel, 83, of Saluda, NC went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 23, 2015.
He was the son of the late Charles and Anna Otten Lingel and was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Lingel and his sister, Charlene Lingel.
Wayne is survived by his twin sister Lorraine Steines of Iowa; daughter, Susan M. Manning and fiancé Steve Harpine; son, Robert S. Lingel and fiancé Sharon; granddaughter, Elizabeth A. Manning and significant other Matt Ryan. In addition, he (Popee, Brother Wayne) leaves behind multiple loved nieces, nephews and close personal friends.
He served in the U.S. Air Force occupation Germany post World War II.
Wayne was a devoted member of Fork Creek Baptist Church of Saluda, NC, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Wayne was a 32nd Degree Mason and past member of the Shriner’s Organization.
Services will be held at Fork Creek Baptist Church Friday, November 27, 2015 at 11:00 am with Reverend James Parker officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church. Internment will follow the service at Saluda City Cemetery with military honors provided by the Henderson County Honor Guard. Pallbearer services will be provided by family, friends and fellow members of the Fork Creek Baptist Church .

Jackie Rex Jarvis, 71

Jackie Rex Jarvis, 71, of Hendersonville, NC passed away Friday, November 20, 2015 at his home.
He was a US Army Veteran and served in the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sylvia Scarborough Jarvis; a son, Jarrod Jarvis of Hendersonville; a daughter, Chana Varon of Atlanta; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Bobby and Gene Jarvis both of Englehard, NC; a sister, Nora Willis of the Outer Banks and a special niece Caperice Dennis of Flat Rock.
A service will be held 12:00 PM Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at the North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain with military honors conducted by the Henderson County Honor Guard.

Marvin Orr, 86

Marvin Orr, 86 of Holly Springs Road passed quietly at his home on Wednesday, November 18. He was the son of the late Harrison Raymond Orr and Ida Shook Orr of Etowah. A life-long resident of Etowah, following graduation from Etowah High School he began his career at Moland-Drysdale Brick Corporation and later, following a long career, retired from the Cellophane area of Ecusta. Upon retiring, he enjoyed working on improvement projects in the coastal areas of North Myrtle Beach and Shallotte.

Some of his greatest joys were in watching his family and friends train and show Walking and Racking Horses. As a hobby, he was very active in the early years of the Racking Horse Breeders Association where he served as a Commissioner and licensed judge. He was a talented builder and in later in life enjoyed home improvement projects including building porches, desks and swings. He was always willing to share his talent with his family and friends of several generations.

Marvin and wife Marilyn enjoyed a lengthy retirement and they loved traveling throughout the south, the beach, and classic car shows. Marvin was active until the end, living independently, driving and helping restore his classic ford pickup and mustang.

He is celebrating in heaven with his cherished wife of 65 years, Marilyn McClain Orr and daughter, Carol Ann Clayton, both preceding him in 2014 and a granddaughter, Tonya Lynette Clayton. Marvin is survived by two; sons Michael his wife Patsy of Cheraw, S.C. and Robert and his wife Kathy of Franklin and Eatonton GA., as well as a son-in-law, Harry Clayton of Etowah. Marvin loved his seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was fortunate to have a caring family of surviving brothers and sisters including Virgina Stepp of Edneyville, Patty Orr, Clair Whitmire and Marjorie Crane, plus a brother, Ray Orr, all of Etowah.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 21st, 2015 at Etowah Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Bryan Henderson. Burial will follow in Oak Forest Cemetery.

DeBois Lewis Edmundson, 94

DeBois Lewis Edmundson, age 94 of Hendersonville died Monday, November 16th, 2015 at the Laurels of Hendersonville. He was born on September 9th, 1921 in Mills River, a son of the late Charles Spurgeon Edmundson and Delpa Sentell Edmundson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Evelyn; four brothers; and four sisters.

Mr. Edmundson resided in Henderson County for 73 years and in Spartanburg County for 21 years on his dream farm with his wife, Evelyn with an acre garden, fruit trees, horses, deer hunting and a private lake for fishing. He returned to Hendersonville to reside at the Bridge in 2012. He graduated from Brevard High School and proudly served his country in the Army Air Force during World War II, infantry that accompanied Patton’s 6th armored division; he fought in the Battle Bulge and was one of the first U.S. Troops to enter Buchenwald and witness the horrors of the Holocaust.

After the war, he married Evelyn Louise McConnell who passed away April 20th, 2005 and served as a police officer in Myrtle Beach. He returned to Hendersonville to work with the Hendersonville Police Department in 1948 until his retirement in 1985. He served as a volunteer fireman and was a member of the Rescue Squad for 20 years. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing.

He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Edmundson Packer, retired Professional Mental Health Counselor and School Psychologist. Currently a successful international level equine show photographer; his two sisters-in-law, Sarah West Edmundson, wife of Bill Edmundson, and Wilma Jean Terry Edmundson, wife of Charles L. Edmundson. Chief Edmundson was very proud of his 34 nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to participate in a Remembrance Gathering at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home on Sunday, November 22nd, between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.

John Lewis Stansell

John Lewis Stansell, age 95 of Mountain Home died Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 at Pardee Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health. He was born in Pelzer, South Carolina, a son of the late Clarence Edgar Stansell, Sr. and Texie Austin Stansell. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Venice; four brothers; and two sisters.

A longtime resident of Henderson County; Mr. Stansell was employed with Kimberly Clark and was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sons, Danny Stansell of Flat Rock and Barry Stansell of Mountain Home; two grandchildren, Amber Stansell of Hendersonville, and Summer Stansell Whitaker and husband, Mike of Waynesville; two great-grandchildren, Kylie Whitaker of Waynesville and Aydan Stansell of Hendersonville; sister-in-law, Joyce Bentley of Hendersonville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 22nd, 2015 at Shepherd Memorial Park conducted by the Reverend Sam McLamb.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home.

Eugene Homer Dickes, 88

Eugene Homer Dickes, 88, of Black Mountain, NC passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the Elizabeth House.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mabelle Atwood Dickes, his wife, Claudia Pasiuk Dickes and a daughter, Mary Littler.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corp when he was 18. He had volunteered at the Broad River Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Bald Mountain Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Wanda Metts of Lyman, SC; two sons, Johnny Metts of Crystal River, Florida and Danny Metts of West Palm Beach, Florida; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Sunday, November 22, 2015 at Bald Mountain Baptist Church with Pastor Ken Rape officiating.

Minnie Jean Gibbs, 74

Minnie Jean Gibbs, 74, of Hendersonville entered Heaven peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 14, 2015. Born February 2, 1941 in Polk County to the late Theodore and Mary Skipper Burgess. She was preceded in death by a son, William Doyle Gibbs; a granddaughter, Jessica Diane Hylemon Duncan; two sisters, Beulah and Lena; three, brothers Calvin, JC and RL.
She was a member of First Church of The Nazarene and loved gospel music. She worked with her husband Bill at GE and retired after 29 years of employment.
Survivors include her loving husband, who spoiled her rotten for 58 years, William “Bill” Gibbs; son, Richard Gibbs (Gail); daughter Diane Taylor (Eddie); four granddaughters, Michelle Hylemon of Dana, Rebecca and Vanessa Gibbs, Larissa Gibbs Byrd, all of Radcliff, KY: two, great-granddaughters, Erica Diane and Briana Marie Duncan; three sisters, Geneva Running (Dave) of Redwood NY, June Lafoy Ruff (Abe) of Kings Mountain, Wilma Lee Clemmons (Bob) of Rutherfordton; two brothers, AD Burgess of Ellenboro, Donald Burgess of Hendersonville; daughter-in-law, Claudia Gibbs of Radcliff, KY; many special nieces and nephews; “Star” the cat she loved.
Funeral services will be held 2:30pm on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Ann Hayes McDonald

Ann Hayes McDonald of Mills River passed away in peace Sunday, November 15, 2015 after a short illness. She was the daughter of the late Harry B. Hayes Jr. and Louise T. Hayes and wife of the late Charles W. McDonald. She was also preceded in death by a son, John Hayes McDonald.
Ann and Charles were married in 1954, at the beginning of his Air Force career. Ann loved to travel and was able to enjoy much of this country as well as the experience of living in the Philippines and Oslo, Norway as a result of Charles’ career. The family retired back to Mills River where they built a home for themselves and their four children as Charles began a second career at General Electric.
Ann loved history, politics, and All Saints Anglican Church, the church where she and Charles were not only founding members, but where they also gave of themselves tirelessly to see the vision come to life. Ann, a former member of the DSS Board in Henderson County, also served the Henderson County Republican Party and was a member and an officer of the Henderson County Republican Women’s Club. She was known by all to be very well-read, outspoken, and passionate about politics.
Ann is survived by her sons, Charles S. McDonald and his wife, Jennie, and David W. McDonald, all of Mills River; and a daughter, Ann Cameron McDonald and her husband, Larry Fleig, of Durango, Colorado. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Ashley, Morgan, Courtney and Kyle, and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 4:00-7:00 in the fellowship hall of All Saints Anglican Church in Mills River. Committal services in the churchyard will be private.

John Michael Carter, 53

John Michael Carter, 53, of Dana, NC passed away unexpectedly, November 13, 2015 at Mission Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard Lee and Barbara Alice Lytle Carter, a brother, David Robert Carter and a sister,
Carolyn Lee Carter.

He is survived by his brother, Jimmy Carter and his wife Tava of Hendersonville, NC; several aunts and an uncle.

officiating.

Howard Willis Bruce, 94

Howard Willis Bruce, 94. Born in Ithaca, New York and resident of Hendersonville since 2005. He began his career by working on the first jet airplane at Bell Labs. He served in the Army during World War II. He later worked for Morse Chain and Motorola. In 1954 he moved his family to Phoenix, Arizona and then to Scottsdale, AZ where he lived for many years. In 1989 he retired to Cottonwood, AZ.
Howard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was a family oriented gentle man that made friends wherever he went. He was always willing to help by using his talents to the best of his abilities while making memories along the way. He loved to camp, fish, and garden. He was also artistic and worked with wood, stained glass, and paint. Some of his favorite memories came from traveling the United States in his motor home. He was eternally curious and loved people and life.
Howard was married for 59 years to Frances Potter and was so fortunate to share his last 6 years with his loving companion, Drew Schultz. He is survived by his three children: Kathy (Larry) Vorbrich of Hendersonville, David (Ann) of Goodyear, AZ and Mary Elizabeth (Louis) St. Germain of Forest Lakes, AZ. Grandchildren Chad and Curt Vorbrich, Melissa Grenley, John St. Germain, Christine Travis and William Bruce. Great-grandchildren: Madison, Ethan and Taylor Vorbrich, Caden Grenley, Rachel Krausman, Michael and Mathias Travis.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the clubhouse at Summer Path. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 828-696-0625 or the Hendersonville Rescue Mission 828-697-1354.

Polly Clinton of Hendersonville , born 1/2/1931 in Princeton, New Jersey died on November 6 at Elizabeth House after a brave battle with PSP , Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a very rare brain disease. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years Dick, just 2 months ago. She is survived by her daughter Betsy (Tom) Tyo of Naperville IL son Jonathan Clinton of Candler NC, granddaughter Julie Jastremski of Naperville, IL, grandsons Jeremy and Sean Clinton of Houston, TX , sister Dotti Sayre of West Grove, PA and other extended family. Polly was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and a dear friend to many. Polly graduated from Trenton State Teacher’s College shortly before Dick & Polly were married in Princeton on 6/21/52. Polly taught 2nd grade and kindergarten until daughter Betsy was born. Dick and Polly lived in Poughkeepsie , NY, Naperville, IL and Houston, TX before retiring to Hendersonville in 1997. Polly loved to cook and entertain, was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling. She was on the welcome committee for Carriage Park where she and Dick lived, and volunteered at Hendersonville Visitors Center for many years. She was also active in her church , First Congregational in Hendersonville serving on various committees, as an usher, greeter, social committee among others. A memorial service will be held 2:00pm Wednesday, November 11th at the First Congregational Church in Hendersonville with interment private . Thomas K. “Tommy” Hargrave, 70, of Hendersonville, NC passed away Friday, November 6, 2015.
He was the son of the late William and Wilma Hargrave.
He served in the U.S. Marines in the Vietnam Conflict.
Tommy was an avid turkey hunter and loved being outdoors. His greatest pride was his loving family.
He is survived by his wife, Janette Hargrave of Hendersonville, NC; his son, Todd K. Hargrave and his wife Sandy of Guyton, GA; his step-children, Sean Case and his wife Anna of Clintwood, VA and Heather Leach of Hendersonville; three grandsons, Tommy Hargrave of Eugene, Oregon, Nick and Jake Hargrave of Guyton, GA; three step-grandchildren, Logan and Tyler Leach of Hendersonville and Ariana Smith of Hendersonville, NC; his sister, Lucille Mazzoni and her husband Larry of Easley, SC; a niece, Beth Ann Mazzoni of Miami, Florida; a nephew, Tom Mazzoni of Australia; his canine granddaughters Katie and Dublin and his many friends.

Karl H. Tuckmantel, 86

Karl H. Tuckmantel, 86, of Hendersonville passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2015 peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Germany and had lived in Hendersonville for 23 years. Before retiring in 1993, Karl was employed by Square D and, as the company’s International Manager, had traveled extensively.

Karl was an avid photographer and a machinist. His passion for computers began with the Radio Shack TRS 80. During his retirement he built, repaired and tested computer systems. He connected many senior citizens with the internet.

Karl is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Bee Tuckmantel; five children, Heike Quinn and husband, Kevin, of Tracy, CA; Erik Lyngse and wife, Taryn, of Boca Raton, FL; Susanne Souri of Ontario, CA; Carla Canby and husband, Ken, of Orcutt, CA; and Kenneth Tuckmantel and wife, Janelle, of Boiling Springs, SC; eleven grandchildren, Brian, Kelsey, Brandon, Erin, Ian, Arianna, Bijan, Cameron, Adam, Hailey and Riley; and one great-grandchild, Ethan.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm Monday, November 9, 2015 in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. The Reverend Steve Jones will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1 – 1:30 pm Monday prior to the service.

William Leroy “Billy” Sullivan, 63

Fairview – William Leroy “Billy” Sullivan, 63, of Fairview, passed away Monday, November 2, 2015 from complications following a long battle with diabetes.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Billy graduated from Asheville High School in 1970, was a former owner of 7-Up Bottling Company, and was currently employed with HD Supply Waterworks. He was an active member in Asheville’s Elk Lodge.
Billy was the son of the late James Henry and Mary Katherine Townsend Sullivan. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James T. Sullivan.
Surviving are his wife, Sheila Rhew Sullivan; daughters: Elizabeth and Julia; step-daughters: Stephanie and Staci; niece, Beth; and nephew, JT. He was the loving “Poppy” to six doting grandchildren, a friend to countless lifelong friends, and a devoted USC Gamecoks fan. GO GAMECOCKS!
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

Walter H. Johnson

Walter H. Johnson

Walter H. Johnson of Hendersonville went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at The Elizabeth House.

Walter was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Walter H. Johnson and Ethel Ennis Johnson and had resided in Bellmore, NY and West Sayville, NY. He and his loving wife of 60 years moved to Hendersonville in 1987. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Catherine (Cate) Johnson, who died in 1998.

He graduated from the W. C. Mepham High School in 1949 and received a B.A. in 1953 and an M.A. in 1958 from Adelphi University. He also received a M.S. in l961 from Union University and did additional graduate studies at New York University.

Walter served in Germany in the 503rd Military Police Company of the Third Armored Division, US Army. He was a high school science teacher for 18 years and a high school administrator in the Deer Park School District on Long Island for 12 years. In 1968, he was selected as one of the top 100 secondary administrators in the country and was invited by the Secretary of State to Washington for a conference on the role of secondary education in the rapidly changing world.

After his retirement he became very active in helping senior citizens. He was active in the local AARP where he held various offices for many years. Walter was the Henderson county coordinator of the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) of the North Carolina Department of Insurance. He was selected as the most outstanding volunteer of the state three times during the 26 years that he served.

He was a member of the Henderson County Nursing Adult Care Advisory Committee for five years and chairman for three years. Walter also served as a member of the Planning for Older Adults, Planning for Older Adult Health Care Task Force, Elder Abuse Committee, Seniors’ Plus Program, and Kiwanis K-line. He regularly attended First Alliance Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol S. Johnson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Jane Johnson and David and Jeanne Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Arnold Spitzer; eight grandchildren, Laura, Lydia, Daniel, Matthew (wife Beth), Elizabeth and Wesley Johnson, Rachel Knouff (husband Phillip) and Karen Spitzer; and one great-grandchild, Eli Knouff.

He was a devoted husband and father and will be dearly missed by all. We praise God, however, that he knows Jesus and has gone to the home in Heaven that was prepared for him.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, November 6, 2015, in the main assembly room on the 2nd floor in the Harbor in Lake at Lake Point Landing. Pastors Ron Glass and Don Chapman will officiate.
