Nailing 'objurgate,' HMS teachers outlast Sugarloaf to win Spell-a-Rama

Kiwanis Club President Jim Brewer presents trophy to Anne Boyette, Kelly Deese, Carlee Smith and John Merkle.

The Hendersonville Middle School Spell Binders correctly spelled objurgate to defeat the Sugarloaf Elementary Spelling Superstars in the first Kiwanis Club Adult Spell-a-Rama on Tuesday.

HMS and Sugarloaf teachers correctly spelled electroencephalogram, pinochle, reconnaissance and flibbertigibbet before the HMS team emerged as the sole survivor with objurgate (verb, Latin; to rebuke, chastise).

The Kiwanis Club thanked all the teams and their sponsors that participated to raise funds to support youth leadership in Henderson County: Apple Valley Middle School; Berkshire Hathaway; BGW CPS,PLLC; Blue Ridge Community College; Carolinas Specialties Construction; Cason Companies; Dana Elementary School; Flat Rock Middle School; Fletcher Elementary School; Friends of Boys & Girls Club; John Woodham; HCPS Central Office; Hendersonville Lightning; Hendersonville Middle School; Lyndsey Simpson and LS Creative; Marlow Elementary School; Sugarloaf Elementary School; Tom Murrill; Trinity Presbyterian; Upward Elementary School; Waynesville Kiwanis Club; and West Henderson High School.

The club also thanked in-kind contributors Abigail’s Finest, Champion Credit Union, Elks Club Lodge, Flavor 1st, Marcos Pizza, and St. Paul’s Winery. The proceeds support club initiatives for youth including student leadership clubs from elementary to college level; the Terrific Kids program celebrating positive character traits demonstrated by elementary students; the annual elementary Spelling Bee; and awards for student achievements in minor sports and the arts.
