ETOWAH — Gloria Maurer, 84, entered the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Elizabeth House, surrounded by her loving family.
While a former resident of both New York and Florida, it was in the mountains of North Carolina where she truly felt at home.
She is preceded in death by her husband, of 44 years, Bernard Maurer, her first husband, Warren Maurer, and two sons, Peter and Warren Maurer.
She is survived by her five children, Michele Davidson, Patricia Doyle, Deborah Jeffries, Richard Maurer and Linda Zaffuto; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and many special friends.
We have all been inspired by her strength, determination, grace and sense of humor. Her loving spirit will live on in us all.
A celebration of her life is being planned for October 13, 2013 at the Etowah United Methodist Church.

Frances Hall King, 104, of Hendersonville died Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Carolina Village Medical Center.
Frances was born Dec. 4, 1908 in Lincoln, Neb., to the late Maxwell and Susan Newman Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis King; her sons, Christopher and Stephen; and her brothers, Newman and Homer Hall. During her lifetime, she lived in Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C., moving to Hendersonville in 1969.
Francis received a B.A. in English from Western College for Women (Ohio) in 1929, and a M.A. from Ohio State on 1930. She attended Breadloaf School of English, Middlebury College for several summers. She taught English at Wilmington College (Ohio), N.C. State (Raleigh), Agnes Scott and Georgia State (Atlanta), American University (Washington D.C.), and Greek plays at the Aegean Institute (Paros, Greece).
Frances was an active member of civic and professional organizations including the League of Women Voters, AAUW (co-founder of the Hendersonville chapter), American Association of University Professors (president of the American University chapter), Western College for Women Alumnae Association, the Association for Retarded Citizens (co-founder of chapters in MD, D.C., GA, and NC), National Association for Retarded Citizens (board member), and Friends Meetings in Bethesda, MD, and Brevard, NC.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan King; daughter-in-law, Sally King; very special friend, Ellie Cox; five grandchildren, Jonathan and Katie Tash, Adam, Kate and Stephen King, Jr.; five great-grandchildren, Alex Tash, Justus, Chloe, Allison, and Kelly King; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, in the Carolina Village Hall. Catherine M. "Kay" Shelton died on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the Elizabeth House.
Kay was a native of West Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., and the daughter of Charles J. and Ida A. Nolan of Jackson Heights, N.Y.
Kay lived in New York City, London, England, and Arlington Heights, Ill., before she and he husband moved to Hendersonville in 1983. Her husband, Robert D. Shelton, preceded her in death in 1990. She is survived by her step-son, Rob Shelton of Palo, Alto, California, his wife Susan, and sons, Matthew and DJ Shelton.

HENDERSONVILLE — Robert Francis Dunlap, 82, of Hendersonville, died on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at the Elizabeth House.
A native and life long resident of Henderson County, he was born on June 12, 1931, to the late Paul W. Dunlap and Wilma Allen Dunlap. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Louise who died Aug. 2, 2010, and his brother, Wesley Dunlap of Hickory who died Dec. 20, 2013.
He graduated from Hendersonville High School and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Air Police. He was of the Episcopal faith.
He retired from Olin Corporation after 38 years of faithful service and was an avid farmer and outdoorsman. He raised cattle, showed horses with his daughter, Denise, enjoyed many types of sports, and being involved in all aspects of his family's life. They were his greatest loves. He was after-all, first and foremost, a "Daddy".
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Lunsford and her husband, James; his two sons, Dennis Dunlap and Douglas Dunlap; his daughter and primary caregiver for the last few years, Denise Dunlap all of Hendersonville. He is also survived by his three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel with Chaplin Jane McKown officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. Matthews Cemetery on Brookside Camp Road. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2013, at the funeral home.

Jordan Samuel Kitchen, 18, of Mills River went to be home with his Lord and Savior Saturday, July 13, 2013.
He was born in Henderson County and graduated from West Henderson High School with the class of 2013. Jordan was an outstanding golfer and high school champion. He was employed by Shank's Driving Range in Greenville, S.C., and worked part time for his uncle.
Jordan loved everyone he ever met on the golf course, and was considered a great all-around person by his teachers, fellow students, teammates, and all who knew him. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. Jordan was baptized in Rutherfordton at Bible Tabernacle and attended Upward Christian Fellowship.
He is survived by his loving mother, Teresa S. Kitchen of Mills River; sister, Brooke Kitchen of Charlotte; nephew, Caiden Karges; and many cousins, aunts, uncles and extended family members.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Upward Christian Fellowship. The Reverends Joe Green and Anthony Craver will officiate. Burial will follow at Mill Pond Cemetery where Jordan will be laid to rest beside his maternal grandparents. The family will receive friends from noon to 3 p.m. at the church.

George Taylor, 88, of Hendersonville died unexpectedly and went to meet his bride, Alice Enloe Taylor, on their wedding anniversary, July 15, 2013.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his special in-laws and several brothers and sisters.
He lived in Henderson County most of his life and was a member of Mountain Home Baptist Church. He was a great coon hunter who loved the outdoors and enjoyed farming.
Mr. Taylor is survived by four children, Refty Taylor and wife, Brenda, of Florida; Sylvia Holcombe and husband, Ed, of Candler; Shirley Byrd and husband, Bobby, of Hendersonville; and Nancy Soukup of Hendersonville; grandchildren, Katrina Owens (Greg), Lucretia Coleman (Chris), Donna Barclay-Jenks, Christopher Lyda, Bobby Holcombe, Kimberly Hartsook (David), Joey Soukup (Sara), and Riannon McNeil (Bill); his brother, Paul Taylor; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013, in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. The Rev. Jimmy Justice will officiate. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Shuler Funeral Home.

Freda Mae McCraw, 67, of Hendersonville, entered into her heavenly home July 12th at the Elizabeth House surrounded by her loving family.
She was a native of Henderson County and a daughter of the late Roosevelt Justus and Earline Cox.
Mrs. McCraw is survived by her husband, James "Pete" McCraw; seven children, Lynn Bradburn, John Cantrell, Kathy Johnson, Tim Cantrell, James McCraw, Karame Campbell and Tosha Garcia-Rivera; sister, Juanita Laughter; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Dana Baptist Church with the Revs. Dan Blackwell and James Shields officiating.

Alice Gregory Lollis, 77, of Flat Rock, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the Elizabeth House following a brief illness.
A native of Duncan, S.C., she had lived in Henderson County for more than 40 years. She was of the Baptist Faith.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Thompson.
Ms. Lollis is survived by three daughters, Frances Berger (Marty) of Hendersonville, Denise Matthews (Robin) of Lyman, S.C., and Kristy Taylor (Barry) of Hendersonville; a brother, Clyde Gregory of Moore, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013, in the chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. The Rev. Jesse Moses will officiate. The family will receive guests following the service at the funeral home.

ETOWAH: — Cloyd Levi, 87, of Etowah died on July 14, 2013.
He was born in Bob's Creek to the late Sylvan and Nora Levi. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Irene Smith and Doris Ann Levi.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Levi; a daughter, Karen Levi (Phillip Steers); two sons, Randy Levi (fiancée, Becky Curtis) and Danny Levi (Becky Levi); three granddaughters, Jenna Gillespie (Chris Gillespie), Nicole Levi (fiancé, Brent Costin) and Kelly Barnett (Brian Barnett); and three great-grandchildren, Avery and Makenzie Morgan and Brayden Gillespie.
He retired from Pardee Hospital. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Etowah and a Baptist deacon.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Shepherd Memorial Park with Rev. Lewis Staton officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at the funeral home.

Hazel Gibbs Gonce, 74, of Hendersonville, left this earth on the wings of a dove on Saturday, July 13, 2013.
She was a native of Henderson County and a daughter of the late Frank and Ethel Shires Gibbs. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Joan Gibbs Henderson; two brothers, Frank "Bud" Gibbs and John Henry Gibbs.
She attended Union Hill Holiness Baptist Church for many years. Hazel loved her daylilies and would always be found outside among the rainbow of blooms. She also loved her special friends Molly and Cody. In a long line of grandmothers, Silina picked Hazel for her grandmother. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Lisa Payne and husband Richard of Asheville; son, Douglas Gonce and wife Lori of Hendersonville; sister, Shirley Hollingsworth of East Flat Rock; five grandchildren, Silina Beddingfield of Hendersonville, James, Austin, and Justin Payne all of Asheville, and Kyle Gonce of Hendersonville; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Revs. Phillip Capell and Larry Oliver will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Doug Gonce.

Bonnie Shaw, 67 of Hendersonville, died on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Regency Hospital in Greenville.
A native of Wasssaw, Wisc., she was born on May 16, 1946, to Fabian and Ursula Kordus. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Shaw; her brother, James Kordus and her sister, Anne Margaret Kordus.
She worked at Henderson County Internists for more than 15 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, an avid quilter, and enjoyed spending time reading and painting.
She is survived by her five children, Renee Squirs and her husband, John, of Asheville, Lisa Shaw of Hendersonville, Michael Shaw and his wife, Amanda, of Asheville, Brenda Burleson of Hendersonville, Terry Smith of Hendersonville; nine grandchildren, Victoria, Emily, Cassandra, Kathrina, Robert, Lauren, Grace, Fabian, Wesley; her mother, Ursula Kordus; her three sisters, Gwen Farrell and her husband, Jack, DePere, Wisc., Gail Dunton and her husband, Thomas, Smyrna, Tenn., Gretchen Koziel and her husband, Timothy, of Plattsmouth, Neb.; her three brothers, John Kordus and his wife, Rhonda of Kenosha, WIisc., Robert Kordus and his wife, Sheri, of Dunbar, Wisc., and Jeff Kordus of Eagle River, Wisc.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Namdev Dagam celebrating. A private burial will take place at a later time.

Mary Jo Cable, 77, of St. Louis, Mo., passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Missouri Baptist Medical Center after an extended illness.
A native of Henderson County, she lived here most of her life. She was a daughter of the late John Zenus and Ruby Martin, and was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. She retired from Diversco, where she was an account manager. A member of Victory Baptist Church, she will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.
Survivors include four daughters, Carol Woodard, Lynn Cable, Kelly Goranson, Sonja Thompson; special friend, Cookie Boussios; a son, Philip Cable and his wife Michelle; three grandchildren, Debbie Kuykendall and her husband John, Ricky Woodard and his wife Melzina, Petty Officer Abbygail Goranson; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine Silvey; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Pastor Stanley Adcock and Rev. John Kuykendall will officiate.

EAST FLAT ROCK — James Thomas Parker, 85, of East Flat Rock, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, July 8, 2013 at his home.
He served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS James D. Stienerker and was of the Baptist Faith. James worked for Asplundh Tree Service and General Electric before moving to Detroit, MI, in 1965 to work for Ford Motor Company. After moving his family back to Henderson County in 1970 he worked as a carpenter until his retirement.
He loved the Lord with all his might and all his heart and all his soul.
He lived for the weekends, when he could go deer hunting. He also was very proud of his participation on the first Honor Air Flight here in Henderson County.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Marilyn Parker and is survived by his five loving daughters, Cindy Hudson, of Zirconia, Lynnelle Hardin of Hendersonville, Nancy Flynn, Linda Yost, Hannah Parker all of Flat Rock; a brother, Lee Parker of East Flat Rock; two sisters; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the best father, grandfather and great-grandfather that his family could have ever asked for. He will be truly missed by all that knew and loved him.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Maranatha Baptist Church with the Rev. Lewis Staton and Dr. R. Larry Appleby officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2013, at the funeral home.

On Saturday, July 6, 2013, Dr. Bill Threlkeld, 84, stepped out into eternity to be with God.
Bill was husband to his wife of many years, Anne Barnette Threlkeld; daddy to his three daughters and their husbands: Debra Threlkeld, Patty & Al Dorn, and Joy & Joe Strassel; and spiritual father and brother to hundreds of Christians throughout the world.
Pages from his life were filled with stories of the Sahara Desert to trips down dusty roads in Africa, from flying jets in the Air Force to fly-fishing in Colorado, from serving others to serving the God he loved. His legacy will continue to live on in the people he touched and changed. On the last page of his life, it simply reads, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
The family and invited guests will lay this honorable man to rest with full military honors at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain at 2 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2013.
The next day, his life will be celebrated at the First Alliance Church of Hendersonville at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013.

Martha Lois Condi, 93, of Laurel Park and Lake Pointe Landing, died Monday, July 8, 2013, at The Elizabeth House.
A native of Potomac, IL, she was born on Dec. 23, 1919, to the late A. Carl Stahl and Leota Stahl. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Albert Condi; and her brother, Robert Stahl and his wife, Marguerite.
She was a graduate of the University of Illinois and in 1953 along side her husband, opened Condi Drill Company in Chicago. In 1972, they moved the company to Hendersonville. An instrumental part of business, she was the Chief Financial Officer before CFO was a popular term. After retiring in 1979, she enjoyed playing golf and bridge, working in her flower garden and ballroom dancing with Albert to the music of the big band era. She also enjoyed the company of countless wonderful friends who shared the same interests. She was an active member of the Laurel Park Planning Board, Council on Aging Meals on Wheels, Forrest Women's Club and the Hendersonville Corale.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Beth Austin, of Hendersonville, Linda Sheard and husband Bart, of Sturgeon Bay, WI; four grandchildren, Micah Sheard and wife, Megan, of Madison, WI, Heather Williams and husband, Daniel, of Madison, WI, Drew Austin and wife Toni, of Raleigh, Patrick Austin, of Snow Mass, CO; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Williams and Paige Williams, both of Madison, WI, Sophia Austin of Raleigh; a brother-in-law, Paul H. Condi and wife Alice, of Evansville, IN and a sister-in-law, Joyce Mizner, of Meadville, PA.

George Franklin "Frank" Hensley, 64, of Zirconia, died Monday, July 1, 2013, after a sudden illness.
He was a native of Dana and a lifelong resident of Henderson Co., a son of the late William and Gladys Spears Hensley. He was also preceded in death by brothers Joe, Paul, Ricky, Roy, Kenneth, and Bill Hensley; a sister Lena Sentell; and a son-in-law Lance Bishop.
He was a member of the East Henderson High School class of 1968 and was employed by City Tire Service for more than 35 years, and M&M Freezer Locker. A US Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a member of the VFW, 40&8, Woodmen of the World, and was a trustee for Lodge 1391. He loved estate and yard sales. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is his wife of 44 years Sherry Nix Hensley; two daughters Melody Bishop Edwards and husband Stacey and Nicole Galladay and husband Steve all of Hendersonville; three grandchildren Michaela Bishop, Blake Bishop and Waylon Lively; sisters Georgia Gilbert and husband Grady of Edneyville, Polly Hudgins and husband Junior of Dana and Christine Orr and husband Carl of Dana; brother James Hensley and wife Carol of Florida; sister-in-law Theresa Leonhardt of Black Mountain; several nieces and nephews; and mother and father-in-law John and Grace Nix of East Flat Rock.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Mud Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Jared Mathis will officiate with music by his niece Angela McGraw. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors rendered by the Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday at Mud Creek Baptist Church and at other times will be at the home.

Rexford S. Souder, 98, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Carolina Village Medical Center.
He was born and grew up in New Jersey, moving to Hendersonville in 1999.
After graduating from Glassboro Teachers College, he got his Masters and Doctorate Degrees at Teachers College, Columbia University, then spent his career in Education, retiring in 1972.
He was preceded in death by his wife Harriet P. Souder in 2010.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Neighbors and husband Gene of Moneta, Va., and Barbara Vant Leven and husband Hugh of Simpsonville, S.C.; two sons, Stephen Souder and wife Peggy Eng of St. Louis, Mo., and Donald Souder and wife Jennifer of Elgin, Ill.; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
