Dell McGinn Orr died peacefully at her home in Hendersonville, North Carolina, surrounded by family, on February 10 at the age of 84.
She was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, in 1941 — the nearest hospital to Fort Mill, where she grew up. As a child, Dell became an exceptional seamstress, making most of her own clothes. She lived close to many aunts and uncles. She graduated from Indian Land high school in 1959 and attended reunions regularly. She graduated from High Point College and remained engaged with the school throughout its transition into a University.
After living in Charleston, where she met her first husband, the couple moved to California, where they raised two daughters. Through her mother’s work with Pan Am, Dell developed a love of travel and explored the world extensively — even circling the globe in just ten days on her own in her early 30s. Dell spent most of her life in California, where she built a successful career in the highly competitive real estate industry.
In 2000 Dell married David Vandre, the love of her life. She and David shared a love of singing in the choir, dancing, and traveling together. Dell loved working in her yard and surrounded herself with fresh flowers, often cut from her own garden (and sometimes other people’s garden) creating beautiful floral arrangements.
When it came time to retire, Dell felt called back to her roots. She and David moved to Carriage Park in Hendersonville, where they found both peace and a welcoming community. She cherished life in the mountains and enjoyed reconnecting with her college roommate and many family members.
