Happy birthday, Dr. Jones

Dr. George A. Jones, a longtime Baptist minister and keeper of Henderson County history, took part in the recent 237th anniversary celebration of the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Jones, who served as a chaplain during World War II, represented past chaplains during the Army Chaplaincy Regimental Ball. He helped cut the cake with a sword, along with a current chaplain and a current student (above) and enjoyed the ball with the military personnel and guests (right). Organizers of the event said Dr. Jones was the only World War II chaplain they have managed to find who was able to make the trip to the event. Last year, Jones attended an event marking the dedication of a monument to the military chaplain service. He turned 92 on Thursday, Aug. 2.
