Digital sign raises awareness of new speed limit

FLAT ROCK —Motorists who are ignoring the new 25 mph speed limit through the busiest part of the village are seeing more visible enforcement in the coming weeks.

Anne Coletta, Flat Rock's vice mayor, told the Village Council Thursday that she met with Henderson County Sheriff's Capt. Brandon Staton about the situation.

"We had some complaints and some phone calls from residents about the change in the speed limit not being recognized by everyone and some speeding and some tailgating," Coletta said. Staton told her that sheriff's office would place a digital speed limit sign on Greenville Highway to remind people of the speed limit, which the NCDOT lowered from 35 to 25 mph in February at the Village Council's request.

This week sheriff's office placed the device to clock and display the speed of northbound traffic as it approaches Little Rainbow Row. "Then they'll move it to around the Playhouse" to clock the speed of southbound vehicles.

"We'll get a report on how many cars, how fast they're going, the average speed and so forth," Coletta said. "Capt. Staton said the shierff's office will have cars in the area and they're keeping an eye on things."
