A school system veteran who started as a special education teacher at West Henderson High School has been named principal of Hendersonville High School, the school system announced Tuesday. The appointment was approved Monday by the Henderson County School Board, effective July 1.

Laura Bruegger, the current assistant principal and athletic director at HHS, fills the principalship vacated by Bobby Wilkins, who is retiring after 44 years with Henderson County public schools, 22 as principal at HHS.

“HHS is very fortunate that Laura Bruegger has been named the new principal," Wilkins said. "She knows the school and all of the great things that have made it such a classic high school for the past 122 years. HHS will continue to thrive under her leadership. Congratulations to her and the school community.”

Bruegger started her career with the county school system in 1999 when she began working as a special ed teacher at West Henderson. She headed Exceptional Children programs at West Henderson from 2009 until 2019, when she joined the Bearcats in current role as assistant principal and athletic director.

“We are thrilled to have Laura Bruegger stepping into the role as principal at Hendersonville High School,” schools Superintendent Mark R. Garrett said. “Her focus on students, knowledge of the community, and passion for education make her the perfect choice to lead the school. Great things are ahead for the Bearcats.”

Bruegger is equally excited about her new role.

“I am incredibly honored to build upon Hendersonville High School's legacy,” she said, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the school's impressive history. "I look forward to continuing working alongside our students, staff, and Bearcat community for many years to come."
