Nonprofit unveils new murals on Seventh Avenue

Billy Smith’s two-part mural in the 600 block of Seventh Avenue East depicts children against a backdrop of familiar landmarks.

STEAP Inc., a local nonprofit, announced the unveiling of new murals in the Historic Seventh Avenue District of Hendersonville.

The mural “A Youthful Journey UP 7th Avenue” depicts the past, present and hopes of the future of community members. Located at 626 Seventh Ave. E. at the Free Clinic, “Journey” shows the delight of children interwoven with Seventh Avenue culture and local landmarks.
The artist, Billy Smith (billysmithart.com) of Brevard, won one of two mural contracts for the project funded, which was funded by the Community Foundation of Henderson County. Billy heard many positive comments and stories of pride during the months he spent painting. A short film about the creation of the mural will be released later in 2024.
STEAP (Storytelling Education & Arts Programs) is seeking walls for more murals in the city and county. Owners can turn a building or parking lot wall into art that attracts business and visitors. Currently, “The City of Four Seasons” mural by Diamond Cash is complete and ready for a home. It is 20x16 feet on marine board and can safely be attached to a building and removed easily.
