BEAM ME UP: Contractor marks milestone as new Fire Station 1 nears completion

Doug Hebb, a retired city firefighter, signs the beam to go in place to support a roof section of the new Fire Station 1.

A crane lifted a beam high in the sky and workers notched it into place on Wednesday afternoon as the contractor marked a traditional milestone in the construction of the city's new Fire Station 1.

The Hendersonville Fire Department and Edfice General Contractors invited City Council members, contractors, community partners, current and retired firefighters and city staffers to celebrate the milestone during a beam signing commemoration on Tuesday, the day before the 70-foot I-beam was put in place the next day. Attendees also had the opportunity to tour the building, which is expected to be completed by the end of May. A grand opening ceremony will be planned following the project’s completion where the public can join and celebrate this much-needed public safety amenity.

The new Fire Station 1 replaces the previous station that was no longer adequate for the growing ISO Class 1 Hendersonville Fire Department. The station will house three companies and their battalion chiefs, living quarters, restrooms and shower facilities a day room and kitchen in addition to administrative offices, life safety division offices and a training room.
