Local 8th grader wins Chatham Hall scholarship

A student from Hendersonville has won a scholarship to attend Chatham Hall, an all-girls boarding school in Chatham, Va.

Caroline Penny, who just completed her eighth-grade year at Hanger Hall in Asheville, is the daughter of Lynn and Bill Penny Jr. of Hendersonville. Her older sister, Molly, attends Chatham Hall.
As a Nilsen Scholar, Caroline will have available to her a wide variety of special academic offerings, unique travel opportunities, and unmatched guidance – from a dedicated Nilsen Scholar Program team to college counseling sessions. She will be able to keep the scholarship as long as she remains in the high academic and social standing that her application demonstrates.
"Nilsen Scholars will be exposed to a broad range of thought in this global community," said Academic Dean Martha Griswold in a news release. "They will be asked to delve deeply into the topic at hand, challenging and pushing themselves to excel in small classes, where their need to learn and to grow will be encouraged."
The Nilsen Scholarship Program is funded by a gift of $31 million from the estate of alumna Bettie Beckwith Nilsen, Class of 1931.
