Flat Rock keeps tax rate level

The Flat Rock Village Council last month unanimously adopted a $3.13 million budget for fiscal year 2026-2027 that keeps the tax rate level at 11.9 cents per $100 valuation.

The property tax levy is projected to bring in approximately $1,811,000 to fund village expenses; additional revenue comes from local sales tax and various utility tax disbursements.

“In spite of the county increase, the village plans to keep our tax rate flat,” said Vice Mayor Matt Toner, who serves as the village budget officer. “We try to budget conservatively so that we can cover these types of challenges.”

Fire protection makes up the largest budget expenditure, with village-collected taxes funding the Blue Ridge, Valley Hill and Green River fire and rescue departments, each of which covers a section of the village. Total fire protection costs for the village are rising to $1.747 million for the fiscal year that starts on July 1.

Other areas of expense are village administration, the Park at Flat Rock and other village programs. As is customary, Village Council members have waived any compensation. Since Flat Rock’s incorporation in 1995, council members have served as volunteers to the village.
