Flat Rock recently received funding from FEMA to cover expenses for the repair of King Creek in the village’s park.
The Village of Flat Rock recently received $356,810 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to cover village expenses for damage repair at King Creek alongside The Park at Flat Rock.
Excessive rainfall from Hurricane Helene caused creek overflow and flash flooding, undermining trails, causing erosion and destabilizing the creek's shoreline embankment. This repair project includes repair and relocation of the Lastein Trail and stream-bank repair along King Creek, according to a press release from the village.
“We appreciate the support we’ve received from FEMA and the state of North Carolina in acquiring these funds for us. We want to make sure our park is as resilient as possible for any future weather events,” said Mayor Anne Coletta. “Our staff has worked hard to submit all required documents in a timely manner, especially Pat Christie, our village administrator, and Michael Dages, our park director. We also had the benefit of professional consulting services provided by Kaitland Finkle with the Land of Sky Regional Council, which has proved invaluable as we navigate the federal system.”
The village earlier received a payment from FEMA of $133,430 to reimburse for clean-up work in the park, completed immediately after the September 2024 storm.
