Mills River to celebrate turning 10

MILLS RIVER — The Town of Mills River will mark its 10th aniversary with a celebration at the Town's Park on June 21 from 4-7 p.m. with free food, live music by the Lonesome Road Band and children's activities.
The process to incorporate the town took several years, a committee of dedicated volunteers and thousands of signatures from residents, but Mayor Pro Tem Lois Pryor recalls fondly when the phone call finally came in 2003. "Mills River worked for three years to become a town and in a meeting on June 23, we got a call from Raleigh that said we would be a Town at midnight , incorporating 22 square miles into a new Town. We were given until July 1 to get everything in place. Just look and see how far we've come with a town hall and park from that moment", Pryor said in a news release.

Indeed, the Town has been busy in the last ten years developing services, building town hall, master planning a 50 acre park, completing phase one of park construction and sponsoring a sewer line project. Development has been steady with some major projects coming to the Town including a new 90,000 square foot Ingle's grocery store, the east coast brewing location for Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and many other commercial and industrial additions. The event on June 21 is a chance to celebrate the hard work that went into incorporation along with the milestones of the Town's last ten years.

"We hope that everyone will join us at the 10th Birthday Event for food music and activities in the park," Town Manager Jaime Laughter said, "It promises to be a family friendly time where the community can come together and celebrate the Town's first decade and all of the changes we have seen during that time."

The event is being provided to the public for free thanks to generous donations from the local business community.
