Southern gateway expanding

Crews demolished the old Mr. Gatti's Pizza restaurant and three other buildings to make way for a new $1 million CVS drug store at 522 S. Main St.

Morgan Construction Co. of Chattanooga took out a building permit on June 12 to build a 12,000-square-foot store on the property between Spartanburg Highway and Mud Creek. Edneyville developer Boyd L. "Bub" Hyder sold the northern-most part of the property to CVS for $1.7 million and Martha Ragan Huggins sold a parcel on the southern end for $500,000, Henderson County land records show.

The CVS store is part of a flurry of retail expansion and remodeling at the southern gateway to downtown. Fresh Market is remodeling and expanding its floor space by 10,000 square feet and Stein Mart is more than doubling in size, to 29,000 square feet, and adding a men's department, children's clothing and housewares.

Meanwhile, on Spartanburg Highway, Ingles is seeking city approval for a new superstore with a pharmacy and a Gas Express at the site of its existing store. The CVS store at that location is moving to the South Main site.
