Local zoning official wins state award

MILLS RIVER —Mills River Zoning Enforcement Officer Pat Christie was recently named Zoning Official of the Year for the state of North Carolina.
Christie, who has worked in Mills River for six years, received the award at the annual conference of the North Carolina Association of Zoning Officials last month in Nags Head. The nominee must show qualities of leadership, dedication to the job, thorough knowledge of the local zoning ordinance and the ability to handle difficult tasks with professionalism.
"Pat is professional, level headed, eager to help citizens and she possesses an eye for detail," Mills River Town Manager Jaime Laughter said in her nomination letter. "All of these qualities have made her an exemplary employee and zoning official."
Before working in Mills River, Christie spent 20 years in county government in Florida, 15 of those in code enforcement.
"She had a wealth of knowledge and when she came into the town she brought all of that experience with her," Laughter said. "She has been an incredible asset to the town."
