County tax collections show $1.7 million gain

Henderson County gained $1.66 million more in property taxes for the 2012-13 budget year than it had projected, the county tax assessor reported in July. The county collected $62,566,394 in current and delinquent taxes, beating by $1,658,644 the $60,907,749 projection the board used to adopt the 2012-13 budget in June of 2012.
County Assessor Stan Duncan issued a report showing that indicators of economic hardship such as foreclosures and bankruptcy filings had spiked from 2009 to 2011 and have generally declined since then.
Delinquent Tax Collector William Lee King reported that the county collects overdue taxes through bank foreclosures, wages, rent or cash. The office currently has 192 properties in pre-foreclosure representing $183,431 in property tax that can be collected. The tax collector considers payment extensions on a case-by-case basis to bring delinquent taxes current within 30, 60 or 90 days, Duncan said. Before initiating a wage attachment, the office notifies taxpayers and gives them 15 business days to satisfy the debt.
