More delays coming at 'Malfunction Junction'

Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin rehabilitation work on the bridge on Interstate 26 West at Exit 31B over I-40 at the I-26/I-40/I-240 junction in Asheville starting at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11.

Crews will be performing substructure and surface repairs in order to lengthen the life of the bridge.

The repairs will take place during overnight hours between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on weekdays and weekends for approximately one month. The estimated date of completion for the project is Sept. 11.

The work will involve various lane closures on all of the major routes that come together at I-26, I-40 and I-240, a site of common traffic backups. Variable message boards will alert motorists to the closures.

The $3.2 million project contract was awarded to American Contracting Services Inc. of Jeffersonville, Indiana.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
