Famed tall ship is skipper's topic at BRCC

The Arts and Humanities Series at Blue Ridge Community College will present "U.S.S. Constitution: A Most Unfortunate Ship" on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Patton Auditorium.

Launched in 1797, the U.S.S. Constitution gained fame in the War of 1812 with a series of victories. Retired Commander Tyrone Martin, the 49th skipper of U.S.S. Constitution, will be the presenter. Highlights of his tenure include completion of a major restoration, leading a Tall Ships parade and hosting a visit aboard by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.

Commander Martin, a career naval officer, served one tour of duty in the Korean War and four off the coast of Vietnam as well as serving in Naval Intelligence specializing in Soviet Sea Power. Since his retirement in 1978, Martin has been a teacher, lecturer, writer, columnist, and consultant on America's early sailing navy. He is a technical consultant for the History Channel's series "Great Ships."
