Solar-powered concert at Chimney Rock
CHIMNEY ROCK — Chimney Rock's solar-powered Music on the Mountain concert from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, in the park's meadows will feature Johnson's Crossroad and Joe Hallock & the Flat Creek Stringband. The concerts will be powered with the sun by Solar Powered Sound using a mobile solar electric system custom designed by musician and solar energy expert Joe Hallock. The local community and visitors are invited to enjoy the family-friendly concert for the price of day admission, which is $12 for adults and $6 for youth (ages 5-15). For concert and band details, visit chimneyrockpark.com.
Johnson's Crossroad from Asheville blends blues, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass and Appalachian Old Time. Their album Mockingbird was voted the #7 Regional Album of 2012 by WNCW, and the band has played to crowds at national festivals like Merlefest, Music City Roots and Bristol Rhythm and Roots. Joe Hallock & the Flat Creek Stringband explores old time Appalachian music while drawing on flavors of Celtic, Caribbean and American cultures through acoustic instrumentation, rich vocal harmonies and a sense of adventure, fun and audience collaboration.
The concert sound system is powered by a mobile solar electric system designed and hand-built by Joe Hallock, owner of Solar Powered Sound. His mobile systems consist of two or four 3x5-foot solar panels, which can produce as much as 500 to 600 watts of electricity. That's equivalent to powering about 8-10 incandescent bulbs or 40 CFL light bulbs and is sufficient to run a professional sound system. Hallock, who studied renewable energy in a graduate program at Appalachian State University, has been providing solar-powered sound at festivals, weddings and special events since 2006. He is also a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and advocate for renewable energy.
The concert series is made possible by sponsors Music City Asheville, Acoustic Corner of Black Mountain, N.C. and WNCW as a media sponsor.
Music on the Mountain will be held rain or shine, but in case of rain, the concert will be moved to the covered pavilion on the Meadows. Limited bench seating is provided at the venue, so attendees are encouraged to bring camping chairs. No beer and alcohol are allowed inside the N.C. State Parks. The Flying Falafel Brothers, which uses locally grown, organic and sustainably produced ingredients, will provide concert concessions with their food truck.
