Wind knocks out power for thousands

Duke Energy reported more than 8,400 power outages in the southern mountains as high winds swept into the area Saturday night and early Sunday. By Sunday afternoon, crews had restored power most the affected homes.

A high wind warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 10 o'clock Sunday night. Duke reported widely scattered power outages in the area, including 2,443 in Henderson County, 4,481 in Buncombe, 1,304 in Polk and 135 in Transylvania. The largest single outage in Henderson County was in the Mills River, said Craig DeBrew, the district manager for Duke Energy.

"About 900 of those are going to be back on momentarily," he said of that outage. In Polk "they're kind of spread out."

At 5 p.m. Sunday Henderson County was down to 470 outages and Buncombe had 880.

Today will be sunny and windy with a high of 53. Tonight the low should drop to 31 and then the area will see a run of nice sunny days, with highs 72 on Monday and 75 on Tuesday.
