Appeals court grants new trial for Jason Young

The state Court of Appeals has ordered a new trial in a sensational murder case that has a Brevard connection.

The appeals court granted Jason Young a new trial because it said the trial court judge should not have allowed testimony about a wrongful death lawsuit that arose from the murder or about a child custody dispute.
Young, who grew up in Brevard, was convicted two years ago of killing his wife, Michelle, in November 2006 at their home in Raleigh. He was arrested in Brevard three years later.
It came out in the course of the trial that Jason and Michelle Young had been in a car wreck in Transylvania County in May 2006. Neither was seriously injured when Jason Young drove off the road. The car plunged down a 100-foot embankment into the French Broad River.
