Hike on new trail promises fall color

Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy (CMLC) on Saturday, Oct. 11, will host a guided hike on the Trombatore Trail—one of the newest trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge.

Hikers will trek to scenic Blue Ridge Pastures—a grassy bald summit that affords a breathtaking panoramic view—by traversing the Upper Brush Creek watershed along the Eastern Continental Divide. The hike is timed to take place at the peak of fall foliage color.
The hike is one of eight in CMLC's newest version of the regionally popular White Squirrel Hiking Challenge. Participants of the challenge who complete all of the hikes earn an embroidered patch and a gift certificate to Mast General Store.
The Trombatore Trail is a segment in CMLC's Upper Hickory Nut Gorge Trail. The budding network will ultimately connect multiple scenic destinations protected by the land trust, including Bearwallow Mountain, Florence Nature Preserve, and Little Bearwallow Falls.
Total hiking distance is 5 miles. This hike is rated as strenuous in difficulty, featuring a total elevation gain of 1,200 feet. This hike is open to the public. Space is limited; make reservations online at carolinamountain.org.
CMLC conserves land and water resources to benefit the quality of life of residents and visitors in Henderson, Transylvania, and surrounding counties. Since 1994, the land trust has protected more than 27,000 acres of natural lands in our mountains.
