I-26 widening, Erkwood-Shepherd fix on new road plan

FLAT ROCK — The new 10-year plan for roadwork statewide would fund the widening of I-26 in Henderson County and a fix for the misaligned intersection of Shepherd Street and Erkwood Drive at Greenville Highway.

It would also include the widening of Kanuga Road from Church Street all the way to Little River Road, though not until 2025.
The new TIP, or Transportation Improvement Plan, schedules the I-26 widening construction in 2020 and the Shepherd-Erkwood work in 2016, Flat Rock Village Councilman Don Farr told the Village Council. Engineers have not settled on how to fix the Shepherd-Erkwood intersection. They're looking at traffic signals or a roundabout, Farr said. The I-26 work is scheduled in three overlapping phases starting with the Airport Road to I-40 segment.

Gov. Pat McCrory and NCDOT Secretary Tony Tata today announced the priority list last week, saying it uses a new strategic funding formula based on safety, economic development and congestion. Under the Strategic Transportation Investments Program, or STIP, the NCDOT will fund 478 highway projects over the next 10 years.

Governor Pat McCrory and North Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Tony Tata today told State Board of Transportation that 303 additional projects will be fully or partially funded and about 126,000 more jobs will be created under the Strategic Transportation Investments (STI) law, which created the Strategic Mobility Formula. - See more at: http://www.governor.state.nc.us/newsroom/press-releases/20141204/ncdot-releases-draft-state-transportation-improvement-program#sthash.jTKICpYW.dpufGovernor Pat McCrory and North Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Tony Tata today told State Board of Transportation that 303 additional projects will be fully or partially funded and about 126,000 more jobs will be created under the Strategic Transportation Investments (STI) law, which created the Strategic Mobility Formula.
Using the new formula over 10 years, NCDOT will fund 478 highway projects and create 300,000 jobs. Using the same existing funds, the old formula would have produced 175 highway projects and 174,000 jobs.

The Draft STIP includes a total of nearly 1,100 projects across all transportation modes and in every county across the state, making this one of our most comprehensive programs ever.
