County to salute Battle of the Bulge

On Dec. 16, 1944, 250,000 German troops attacked approximately 80,000  American troops along a thinly held line in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium. The German offensive, the last ditch Nazi offensive of World War II intended to overwhelm Allied ground forces, became known as the Battle of the Bulge.

The historical account of this battle is filled with uncommon valor, courage, sacrifice and bravery. American troops fought and overcame great odds in what is regarded as one of the greatest infantry victories of the war.

On the 70th anniversary of that pivotal battle, Henderson County will fly the United States Army flag at the Historic Courthouse to commemorate their sacrifice and to honor their memory. To honor and recognize the thousands of men and women currently serving in the armed forces around the globe, the county will alternate flying military service flags throughout the holiday season as a salute to their service.
