County names new library director

Trina Rushing speaks to the Board of Commissioners about the Henderson County public library.

Trina Rushing, the second in command at the Henderson County Public Library until the retirement of longtime library director Bill Snyder, has been named the library director.

A native of Michigan, Rushing earned her bachelors degree in elementary education from Saginaw Valley State University in her home state and immediately headed south.
"Right after I earned my bachelor's degree I moved down here and started teaching," she said. She taught in public school, first in Transylvania and then Henderson County.
Taking classes in Asheville at nights and on weekends, she earned her masters degree in library science from UNCG. She came to work for the Henderson County Public Library in 2002, left for two years in 2005 and returned in 2007. She and her husband, Jason, live in the Fruitland community. They have a 7-year-old daughter. She had been administrative librarian and interim library director before Assistant County Manager Amy Brantley offered her the director's job.

Rushing told the Board of Commissioners Monday night that Henderson County has an excellent library.
"One of our goals is to bring an awareness of these services," she said, "the ones we offer currently and those that will evolve as we move forward."
The library's advisory board and its administrators are working now on plans for the future.
"A lot more's going to come out once we approve our next three-year plan," she said. "It will go into effect July 1."
