City to close Fifth Avenue for pipe repair

The city of Hendersonville will  close Fifth Avenue West between Buncombe and Fleming streets on Monday for up to two weeks to replace a storm water pipe.

The condition of the pipe is beyond repair and has to be replaced, the city said in a news release. A contractor will begin by trenching across Fifth Avenue and removing the old pipe. After the old pipe has been removed, the new pipe will be installed, covered with compacted stone then asphalt. The contractor expects the work to take one to two weeks depending on weather.

The Public Works Department has constructed a temporary gravel entrance to the Post Office. Unfortunately, it can only be accessed from the Fleming St. side of the project. The Post Office, local businesses and homes will have uninterrupted access to their facilities throughout the project but will only be able to approach them from one end of the block or the other. The city will put up temporary signage to help motorists navigate around the construction site. For questions about the program, please call the Public Works Department at (828) 697-3084.
