New director attends UW training

Denise Long

Denise Cumbee Long, incoming executive director of United Way of Henderson County, recently attended the New Presidents Forum at United Way Worldwide in Alexandria, Va. Despite snow and cold weather, this forum attracted 81 new CEOs from around the United Way network.

Among the learning sessions held during the three-day forum were governance and leadership; brand management and marketing; enterprise-wide strategies; and business performance. Long was excited for this opportunity to learn and network with other new United Way professionals.

"It was an extremely helpful and informative event that will give me a jump start on my role at UWHC, and I will be eager to share the information I received with the staff and board," Long said. "After hearing from a variety of other new United Way leaders, I came away even more impressed with how well UWHC is doing, and I am excited to be joining this organization soon!"

Long looks forward to leading the continuing work of Henderson County 2025 (HC2025), United Way's Ten-Year Plan to Improve the Community. Included in this bold plan are six target issues UWHC and its partners are addressing: Kindergarten Readiness, School Success, Financial Stability, Affordable Housing, Reducing Obesity, and Encouraging Healthy Youth Behaviors.

Long will join United Way as Executive Director on April 1, succeeding Ruth Birge, who has led UWHC for the past five years.
