BRCC offers local history class this summer

The Continuing Education Department at Blue Ridge Community College will offer two Henderson County History and Heritage courses this summer. Classes are held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

Henderson County History and Heritage I, covering prehistory to 1860, will be held for six weeks from May 26 through June 30. Topics include geography and natural resources, Cherokee and Catawba history and culture, Revolutionary War and treaties with the Cherokee, early settlers and backgrounds, Appalachian culture, political and economic history, agriculture, transportation, religious history, education, early communities, black history and noteworthy families and people in the early history of the county.
Henderson County History and Heritage II, covering 1860 to the mid 20th century, will be held for six weeks from July 7 through Aug. 11. Topics include the Civil War, Reconstruction, black history, Appalachian culture and stereotypes, political and economic history, industry, agriculture, transportation, religious history, education, tourism, and 19th and 20th century communities.
The instructor is Jennie Jones Giles.
