WEEKEND TIPOFF: Relay for Life, dogs, HSO ball, Putt-Putt and a popup

Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society will host the Henderson County Relay for Life event Friday, May 15, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Jackson Park, field #5.
Over the course of the evening there will be opportunities to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have lost their battle. In addition to the Relay event, cancer survivors can visit the Survivor Tent with refreshments donated by local restaurants and play Bingo. A caregiver pinwheel garden will also be display, celebrating the many caregivers in Henderson County that dedicate their lives to taking care of loved ones battling cancer. The event also includes guest speakers, musical guests and other entertainers throughout the night.
Limited parking is available at Jackson Park. Additional parking will be held at the Henderson County Courthouse with trolley services available. No pets are allowed at Jackson Park.

Barq in the Parq

The second annual Barq in the Parq for dog lovers to support local animal nonprofits will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 16, on the green at Mountain Lodge and Conference Center on Upward Road at I-26.

Barq in the Parq is a wag-filled community event for dog lovers and dog adopters to benefit Charlie’s Angels, Brother Wolf and Blue Ridge Humane Society. Entry fee is only $5 and with over 40 vendors from Asheville to Greenville participating with you and your dogs health in mind, the day will be filled with dogs, music, food, art and more.
Organizers at WTZQ AM-1600 and Mountain Lodge and Conference Center are proud to have as presenting sponsors BMW of Asheville and Morris Broadband. Supporting sponsors are Cason Companies, Diamond Brand Pet Food and Animals R Us. Dogs are welcome.

U.S. Open Mini-golf Championship

Champions Golf Learning Center in Hendersonville will host the U.S. Open of MiniGolf Friday and Saturday as a Discovery Channel crew films the action.

The tournament offers a cash purse of $8,000, one of the largest purses for a miniature golf tournament, is expected to attract top mini-golf competitors for the eight-round championship. Course owners Mary and David Sciupider said last week that Discovery Channel had confirmed plans to film the play for a reality show about the professional mini-golf circuit.
The Joe Gibbs NASCAR No. 20 will be on site Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for photo opportunities.
An amateur division and junior division will play alongside the pros. Registration is open until 5 p.m. Thursday. An opening ceremony is at 8 a.m. Friday.

Black & White Ball supports HSO


A BMW Performance Driving Experience, an African Safari, a motorcycle ride, a Jaguar for a weekend and/or a four-day use of a new electric BMW are among items in a live auction at the Black & White Ball, on Saturday, May 16, at the Champion Hills Club.
The Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra’s premier fundraiser, the event supports the HSO, three Hendersonville Symphony Youth Orchestras, the Hendersonville Symphony Children’s Choir and youth educational activities and scholarships.
Guests will also enjoy looking over dozens of attractive items and gift certificates for goods and services included in a silent auction. A live auction will be directed by Stan Shelley of Shelley’s Jewelry. Among the auction offerings will include several wonderful getaway vacations, including a week in beautiful Kiawah Island, a week in a mountain resort in Cashiers; a Greenville, S.C., package that includes a weekend stay at the recently renovated Westin Poinsett Hotel, dinner for two at High Cotton, two tickets to the Greenville Symphony and Sunday brunch at Soby’s Restaurant; an Asheville package that includes an overnight hotel stay, tickets to the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, gift certificates to Chestnut and Corner Kitchen and a weekend use of a new Jaguar.

Pop-up market coming to SAB


A one-day pop-up market will sell fun, functional and bling vintage home décor and clothing as well as local repurposed and handmade goods from noon to 8 p.m. at Southern Appalachian Brewery on Locust Street.
Vintage Hendo will feature 30 vendors from across Western North Carolina and the S.C. Upstate including many from Henderson County.
Mobile Global Bistro will be the food truck for the festivities. Shoppers can continue the fun with live music at 8 p.m. It’s kid and critter friendly.

Blue Ridge Ringers perform Sunday

Ragtime and spirituals, sacred music and handbell classics will be featured at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Brevard on Sunday, May 17, when the Blue Ridge Ringers perform a concert at 4 p.m.
Organized in September 1995, the 5-octave ensemble under the direction of Robert Currier includes 14 ringers from Western North Carolina and Greenville, S.C. The concert will open with “Bwana Asifiwe!” (Praise the Lord!), an African percussion piece by Cathy Moklebust, and includes the opening of Hart Morris’s “Contemplation and Dance on Kingsfold,” the joyous “Rondo Passacaglia” by Cynthia Dobrinski, “Serenade on a Picket Fence,” “A Walk in the Park” by Karen Buckwalter and Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.”
The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd is at the corner of Fisher Road and U.S. 64 across from Ingles. Admission is free. There will be a freewill offering.

 

Playground Project hosts movie fundraiser


The Hendersonville Inclusive Playground Project (HIPP) is sponsoring a showing of the Disney nature film “Bears” at Flat Rock Cinema on Monday to raise money for the playground at Hendersonville Elementary School.
Inclusive playgrounds provide universal play spaces that let children of all physical, mental and development needs to play side-by-side with their peers.
“Our project’s goal is that no child will be left on the sidelines day after day because of environmental factors that are within our power to change,” HIPP says.
