Mills River OKs canoe launch

MILLS RIVER — Paddlers will have the opportunity to access the Mills River from a boat dock at Mills River Town Park later this summer.

The Mills River Town Council on Thursday authorized a contract for $58,150 with Gosnell Construction Co. for a kayak and canoe launch and parking lot. The gravel lot will be accessible from Hooper Lane just south of the bridge over the Mills River. On the recommendation of engineer Tom Jones, the council added $1,600 for a silt fence to prevent erosion.
Five bidders submitted prices. Others were Moore & Son, $59,635; Miller Brothers, $59,784; Trace & Co., $63,831; JLS Company, $81,710.
