WEEKEND TIPOFF: Bluegrass and folk, poetry and spokes

Kids enjoy dancing at Music on Main.

There's music day and night for three days through Monday. It all starts with the first Music on Main show of the season Friday night. The beat goes on during Celebrate Flat Rock on Saturday, the Fletcher Flyer (for bike riders) at Oskar Blues in Brevard on Sunday and the first Monday Night Live! show.

Music on Main


Asheville-based band Tuxedo Junction kicks off the 17th annual Music on Main concert series at 7 p.m. Friday at the Visitors Center, 201 S. Main St.

Celebrate Flat Rock


Celebrate Flat Rock 2015 feature ice cream, bluegrass music, Carl Sandburg home tours, fire trucks, police dogs and other events starting at noon Saturday. As part of the celebration the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site will host free hour-long walking tours of the grounds of Connemara 11 a.m. and 1, 2 and 3 p.m. starting at the Sandburg Home. Flat Rock’s free Summer Music Series continues at 6 p.m. on the deck behind the Wrinkled Egg on Little Rainbow Row in Flat Rock with Tom Fisch performing folk, country and Americana.

National Trails Day at Chimney Rock State Park on Saturday features guided hikes throughout the day free with park admission.Robert MorganRobert Morgan

Celebrate flight


The Western North Carolina Air Museum Annual Air Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday includes open house, antique aircraft on display, flybys, memorabilia and artifacts. Free.

Robert Morgan poetry


Poet and author Robert Morgan launches his latest book of poetry, ”Dark Energy,” with a reading and book signing at the Historic Courthouse at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Square dancing


Southern Lights Square and Round Dance Club will hold a dance at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Whitmire Activity Center.

Fletcher Flyer

The Blue Ridge Bicycle Club hosts the Hunter Subaru Fletcher Flyer on Sunday starting at 8 a.m. The first thing to know about it? It’s not in Fletcher. The supported bike ride starts and ends at Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard. Riders may choose routes of 33, 50, 62 or 100 miles winding through the valleys. The reward at the finish line includes a bluegrass band, barbecue by Mayberry’s restaurant and a free Oskar Blues beer. Cost is $55. Blue Ridge Bicycle Club members get a $5 discount. Monday Night Live!


The Monday Night Live! concert series opens with Lynn Goldsmith & the Jeter Mountain Band. Featuring Tom Murray, Steve Briggs and Mike Orr backing lead singer Goldsmith, the band plays original tunes along with a large variety of covers from many genres of music. It’s at 7 p.m. at the Visitors Center parking lot.
