WEEKEND TIPOFF: Music on land, turtles at sea and BBQ

Sea turtles star in David Weintrab's 'Call of the Ancient Mariner,' which has a local premiere and DVD relese party Friday night.

Here's your quick glance at this weekend's festivals, performing arts and other events in and around Hendersonville.

The Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, features the official North Carolina barbecue championship, music on the Main Stage and Riverside Stage, a classic car show on Saturday, carnival rides, the Blue Ridge Craft Fair and barbecue with all the trimmings. Admission is free 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday and after that $8. Active duty military men and women are admitted free.

Music On Main features Dashboard Blue playing oldies and beach music plus a Corvette Car Show at 7 p.m. Friday at the Visitors Center.

David Weintraub’s sea turtle movie, “Call of the Ancient Mariner,” has its local premiere at the Unitarian Fellowship on Kanuga Road in Hendersonville at 7 p.m. Friday. Named “Best of the Festival” at the Charleston Film Festival, the documentary chronicles the history of the sea turtle and its relation to man. The Unitarian Fellowship is at 409 E. Carolina Rex performs 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Fletcher’s Concert in the Park at Fletcher Community Park. Dickey’s BBQ, cold drinks and ice cream treats for sale.

“Over the River and Through the Woods” continues at the Flat Rock Playhouse Downtown.

“Arsenic & Old Lace” opens at Hendersonville Little Theatre.

Movie on the Meadows presents Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” at Chimney Rock State Park on Saturday watch on outdoor movie on the big screen. $10 per car. (Bring a flashlight.)

Jun Luke Foster, winner of the 2010 Jacob Flier International Piano Competition, performs at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Hendersonville, 2021 Kanuga Road.

Monday Night Live! at 7 at the Visitors Center series features the Eric Congdon Band delivering a mix of classic country and bluesy rock’n’roll.
