Deputies charge local man with sex assault of runaway

Capps

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 46-year-old local man who they said sexually assaulted a 14-year-old female runaway while displaying a machete.

Edward Rummus Capps III was arrested without incident on Tuesday at the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office. He has been charged with three counts of sexual offense with a child. Investigators said in arrest warrant that Capps committed sexual offenses against the girl while displaying a machete.

Capps is currently being held at the Henderson County Detention Facility on a $300,000 bond.

Investigators say Capps picked up the female juvenile runaway and took her to his home at 48 Sunset Crest Lane. She was able to escape and ran to a nearby residence seeking assistance. Dispatch received a suspicious person call that led officers to the victim. Through the investigative work of the violent crimes/domestic violence unit, it was determined that the juvenile had been sexually assaulted.

Capps was presented with his first court appearance Wednesday, and the original bond remained at $300,000. His second scheduled court appearance is set for June 30th in District Court.
