Paving to start today on city streets

Crews posted signs on streets that will be milled and repaved. The work is set to start Thursday night.

Fifth Avenue from Fleming to Church, Fourth Avenue (the city's downtown bikeway) from Justice to Blythe and streets around Hendersonville High School are among the roads that will be repaved over the next four to five weeks.

The Hendersonville City Council approved the awarding the 2015 paving contract to Southeastern Asphalt, the low bidder for the work, at $472,611. The next lowest bidder was APAC Harrison, at $546,715.

The following streets are scheduled to be resurfaced:

  • Fifth Avenue from Fleming to Church
  • Fourth Avenue from Justice to Blythe
  • Justice from Fifth to U.S. 64
  • Oakland from U.S. 64 to U.S. 25
  • Bearcat Boulevard from Oakland to North Main Streets.
  • Buncombe Street from Bearcat Boulevard to Seventh Avenue.

Construction could begin as soon as this week and should be completed over the next four to five weeks, the city said in a news release. In order to minimize the inconvenience to the public, much of the construction will be done at night, particularly on streets with heavy traffic or in business districts. The project will consist of milling the existing street 3 to 4 inches and then applying 3 to 4 inches of new asphalt. The exact depth will depend on the street. The milling work will be completed on all affected streets before any resurfacing begins. Resurfacing will begin shortly thereafter and will be completed as soon as possible.

Public Works Director Tom Wooten notified residents and businesses on Wednesday that the contractor is scheduled to start the milling work at 7 p.m. Thursdayon Bearcat Boulevard near Boyd Park followed by Bearcat Blvd from Oakland Street to North Main Street, Oakland Street from U.S. 64 to Asheville Highway and Buncombe Street from Bearcat Blvd to Seventh Ave.  The next two to three days will include Justice Street from 5th Avenue to Hwy 64, 5th Avenue from Fleming Street to Church Street and 4th Avenue from Justice Street to Blythe Street.

After the milling is completed, Southeastern Asphalt will return to begin installing the new asphalt which should be around July 13 or 14, Wooten said.  The asphalt work is expected to take another five or six days which should end around July 20. After the asphalt has been installed, a separate contractor will come and install the thermoplastic lines striping to match what was in place prior to resurfacing. While working, the contractor will block the road for safety.
