WEEKEND TIPOFF: Rhythm&Brews, Chalk It Up!, Craft Fair, Burning Can

Mountain Heart headlines tonight's Rhythm & Brews concert.

Here are the weekend highlights:

Thursday, 5 p.m.: Rhythm & Brews concert features Mountain Heart in the Azalea parking lot on King Street downtown. Singer-songwriters Carver & Carmody perform at 5 p.m. and the Stipe Brothers crank up at 6 p.m. Free.

Thursday through Sunday: The Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands features 200 craftspeople at the US Cellular Center in Asheville. Admission, $8’ two-day pass $12; children free.

Friday, 7 p.m.: Music on Main featuring Deano and the Dreamers.


Saturday, 10:30 a.m.: The Cradle of Forestry features programs on Western North Carolina's logging train history. Visitors will explore the rich history of a time when many livelihoods depended on logging trains winding their way through the area's forest coves. Western North Carolina train historian Jerry Ledford will present a slide program at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The program features old photographs of the real people and places that are part of local logging history. After each program Ledford will lead the group on the wheelchair accessible Forest Festival Trail to see the Cradle's old Climax locomotive and discuss its history and mechanics. Admission is $5 for adults and free for youth under 16. America the Beautiful and Golden Age passports are honored.

Friday and Saturday: Oskar Blues Burning Can festival will celebrate canned craft beer with a weekend of live music, sports, and of course, beer. Oskar Blues REEB Ranch at 315 Shoals Falls Road, Hendersonville. Tickets $50, camping $60.

Saturday, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.: Jump Into The Park, a family fun day at the Carl Sandburg Home, features a day of activities. Young visitors will earn junior ranger patches and awards. House tours are free.

Saturday: Chalk It Up! Started with three children drawing in front of their mother's store, Chalk It Up! has blossomed into one of the most beloved and endearing events downtown featuring 150 artists of all ages covering six blocks with colorful drawings. 

Saturday: North Main music and arts demonstration, outside on the sidewalk at 536 N. Main. Free.

Monday, 7-9 p.m.: Street Dance featuring Walt Puckett as caller, Appalachian Fire and Southern Connection Cloggers.
