Baby Girl, the roving dog that had friends up and down Grove Street, has emerged from surgery in good shape, her new owner says.

Mike and Mary Cervini, the founders of the Community Partnership for Pets, caught the timid loner they called Baby Girl on June 30. Veterinary surgeon David Crouch removed a large tumor from Baby Girl's belly last week.

"She is doing well and enjoying not having that mini-bowling ball hanging on her," Mary Cervini said in an email update on Tuesday. "The biopsy came back yesterday .. and the sections sliced off and examined are 'BENIGN'. Yes, that is the report. Of course, we all know that there could be cancer in a sample not tested .. but all we can say about this is 'God is Good.'

"She is eating and resting and taking medications for infection and pain. Yesterday she decided she liked laying on a softbed and is taking many more longer strolls around the yard. Her staples come out next week and then a bath."

Many people want to visit the animal some called "Hendersonville's dog." Cervini said she might hold a "MeetNGreet Baby Girl day."

"She is cautious and leery of new things, but is doing well for 10-plus  years on her own," she sad. "She has met some of our dogs and she is okay with them. She is enjoying a bowl always full of food (some extras like chicken, salmon, meat) and all the fresh water she can drink."

Cervini thanked the many friends of Baby Girl who fed her for many years, checked on her since the Cervinis rescued her and donated to her care.

"She is alive because you all cared," she said.
