Girlfriend faces murder charge in poisoning death

A 27-year-old Landrum, S.C., woman faces first-degree murder charges in what authorities say was the poisoning death of her 51-year-old boyfriend.

Brittany May Crockett was charged today for causing the death of Jeffrey Brittain, District Attorney Greg Newman announced. Crockett appeared in Polk County District Court Wednesday afternoon before Judge Athena Brooks and told the court that she would hire her own attorney, a news release said. A probable cause hearing was scheduled for Aug. 26, at the Polk County Courthouse.

Crockett is being held with no bond in the Transylvania County Jail, where she had been held since July 9 on an outstanding warrant for an unrelated open container charge, WLOS-TV reported.

Brittain, of Mill Spring, died on Wednesday after being on a ventilator for about a week. The Polk County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation into his possible poisoning because he had been sick for weeks, WLOS said. Brittain jailed on a domestic violence chargeon July 9 and bonded out. Sheriff's deputies responded to a call that day involving Crockett.
