New charter school accepting preliminary enrollment forms

Parents interested in enrolling children in Henderson County’s newest charter school may apply starting this week.FernLeaf Community Charter School made available “intent to apply” forms starting Tuesday.
“We’re just asking folks to register their intent to apply, which will be during our open enrollment period in January,” said Michael Luplow, a member of the Board of Directors and one of the founders of FernLeaf. The form asks parents and guardians of prospective students questions about academics and what kind of after-school programs they’re interested in.
School leaders, meanwhile, are close to finalizing a deal in order to build a schoolhouse.
“We are in the process of hammering out the final details on that this week,” said Luplow, who teaches orchestra at Apple Valley Middle School and North Henderson High School. “It’s looking like Fletcher. We are hoping to be able make an announcement within the next couple of weeks. Most likely we will end up purchasing land and putting in very nice modular construction.”

After the Fletcher Town Council expressed no enthuisasm for the idea, FernLeaf dropped its request to use town-owned land next to Fletcher Town Hall.
Completion of the intent to apply form will help FernLeaf plan for the arrival of students in August 2016. Forms will be available in English and Spanish and may be completed online at the School’s website, www.fernleafccs.org. Hard copies will be available at Henderson County public library branches and will be mailed upon request by contacting FernLeaf at 8282908860 or info@fernleafccs.org.
Fernleaf is a K8 tuition free public school dedicated to providing students with engaging, hands on, experiential learning opportunities. It plans to open a year from now with 176 pupils in grades K-3, adding one grade a year until it reaches eighth grade and a projected enrollment of 416 students.
