APPLE FESTIVAL: Wet and cool

The North Carolina Apple Festival is likely to see periods of light rain off and on especially over the weekend. The good news is cloudy skies will keep temperatures in the mid 70s to low 80s.

“It’s actually going to be kind of wet this weekend,” said Jake Wimberley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Greer, S.C. “We have a high pressure system that’s a lot like a pattern we get in the winter where it’ll be cold and drizzly. It won’t be cold but there will be a period of showers or maybe light rain and drizzle. The best chance (for rain) is going to be Saturday.”
Popup showers could happen in the early afternoon after cloudy mornings, with the chance of rain diminishing as it gets cooler after sunset.
“Sunday looks drier,” Wimberley added. “The good news is it’ll be lower 80s or upper 70s.” The chance of rain creeps back on Monday, for the festival-closing King Apple Parade.
It will be unlike those sweltering Labor Day weekends of hot days punctuated by booming thunderstorms.
“It won’t be a typical summer pattern where it’s clear in the morning and then clouds up,” the forecaster said. “It’ll probably be pretty cloudy during the day and if it stays really cloudy in the morning there still could be some showers any time during the day.”
Light rain and drizzle are more likely than a downpour.
“We’re not expecting any tremendous large rain amounts,” Wimberley said. “In fact, the rainfall will probably be pretty light overall. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, we’re probably looking at less than half an inch. Unless a shower formed in the afternoon right over the parade, say, that location could get an inch. But in general we're probably not looking at much rain (accumulation) at all.”
Friday is shaping up as the sunniest day. The forecast calls for opening day highs of 84 under mostly sunny skies. Chance of rain on Saturday is 60 percent with a high of just 76. The high Sunday is expected to be 76 with a slight warmup on Monday to 78. Overnight lows should drop to the low 60s.
