LOCAL BRIEFS: Tour de Falls, piano concert, Art on Main

Tour de Falls is Sept. 26-27


Tour de Falls in DuPont State Recreational Forest will be held on Sept. 26 and 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tour de Falls is the perfect opportunity for families or someone with limited hiking abilities to visit DuPont State Recreational Forest via a shuttle bus. The shuttle buses will take visitors on a 12 mile tour to four of the most spectacular sites in DuPont State Recreational Forest: Triple Falls, High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Lake Julia.

A variety of wildflowers are plentiful along forest trails and streams from spring through the fall. Blooming wildflowers provide visitors with months of enjoyment and photographic opportunities.

Buses will leave the event parking area approximately. A donation of $12 per person is requested for ages 18 and over, $6 for ages up to 17. Donations are greatly appreciated and can only be accepted by cash or check.
The Tour begins and ends at the event parking area located near 89 Buck Forest Road, Cedar Mountain.

Helping Hand is Miller's award winner

Helping Hand Developmental Center, preschool program in East Flat Rock that provides exceptional early education opportunities to children with and without special needs in an inclusive environment, won a $500 donation from Millers Fine Drycleaning as part of the company’s 100th anniversary.

To celebrate, Miller’s is giving away a year’s worth of free dry cleaning. To enter, customers complete an entry form at either Miller’s location. One winner will be drawn from all entries in December 2015. The winner is eligible for up to $1,000 in free dry cleaning to be redeemed in 2016.
For the community promotion, Miller’s is giving $500 each month June through November to a nominated Henderson County non-profit. To vote, add Miller’s Fine Drycleaning as a friend on Facebook and follow the instructions on how to nominate. Miller’s will close the campaign at the end of each month and choose the charity that received the most posts during the month. The charity must be a registered 501(c)3 in Henderson County and can only win one time.
The mission of Helping Hand is to provide quality child development services to all children in Henderson County with a unique commitment to serve those who are physically, emotionally, and educationally challenged so that they may realize their potential.


All Saints Anglican to hold Craft Show


All Saints Anglican Church will hold a Craft Show on Saturday, Oct. 10. Tables will be available to rent for $25. If you like to prepare crafts and would like a place to sell your wares, contact Father Erich Zwingert at 828-891-7216.

Art on Main festival to be held Oct. 3-4


The Arts Council of Henderson County will sponsor the 56th annual Art on Main fine art/fine craft festival on Main Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4.

One of the region’s most popular outdoor arts festivals, Art on Main will feature fine arts and fine crafts from local and regional artists, as well as many artists from states beyond the southeast region. More than 75 artists will participate in this juried and judged festival.
An awards reception is being planned to honor all artist vendors who are participating in Art on Main on Saturday evening after the show closes for the day and $3,000 in prize money will be awarded. In addition to the $1,000 Best of Show Award, first place ($500), and second place ($300) prizes will be awarded in both categories of fine art and fine craft. Four Honorable Mentions of $100 each will also be awarded.
Art on Main is presented by the Arts Council of Henderson County with major support provided by Morris Broadband. Kevin Ayesh opens BRCC concert series

The 2015-2016 Blue Ridge Community College Concert Series will open with a performance by pianist Kevin Ayesh at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Thomas Auditorium. The program will feature works by Mozart and Chopin, as well as Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” A reception will follow the concert, with cake provided by Chef Dan Knapp of Lake Pointe Landing Retirement Community.
The Lead Music Instructor at Blue Ridge Community College since 1992, Ayesh has presented recitals and master classes at colleges and universities throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Germany and Hong Kong. He has been a prizewinner or finalist in several national and international competitions, and has appeared as a concerto soloist with many orchestras in western North Carolina.
Admission to the concert is $10, payable at the door; admission for all students is only $5. Season tickets for the entire series of six concerts are $50. All concerts feature non-reserved seating. Proceeds benefit the college’s Personal Enrichment Program. Thomas Auditorium is located in the Sink Building on BRCC’s Henderson County campus. Soul Vision to sing
at Refuge Baptist

Literacy Council seeks volunteers


Blue Ridge Literacy Council is seeking adult volunteers interested in becoming tutors and helping Henderson County adults learn or enhance their reading, writing and spoken English skills.
The waiting list of adults seeking a tutor has grown to almost 50 students. Teaching experience or knowledge of another language is not required.
Tutors are matched with students and meet twice a week for 1½ hours. Volunteers must also complete a 10-hour training workshop and be at least 18 years of age. An orientation for potential volunteers will be held Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the BRLC offices on the campus of Blue Ridge Community College. Grace Lutheran site of Wednesday ‘Oasis’


Grace Lutheran invites the community to “Oasis,” its Wednesday evening programs for children and adults. Beginning with dinner from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m., the evening continues from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with educational activities for all ages including choir rehearsals, adult Bible studies led by a pastor, youth group activities, and supervised children’s activities for ages 5 years through 5th grade. Child care for children birth through 5 years old will also be available after dinner.
No registration is required, and no fees are charged. Beginning Wednesday and for the succeeding 10 weeks from 5:45 to 7 p.m., four discussion classes for adults will be held. Led by the Rev. Greg Williams, the topic for the first four weeks is “Claimed, Gathered, Sent: Conversations about the Church.”
For dinner reservations, please call the church by Monday afternoon for the upcoming Wednesday meal. Meals include a main dish, vegetable choices, dessert and a salad bar. The cost for dinner is $5 per person, $3 for children under 12, with a $16 family cap.
