Whitley Drugs moves down Greenville Hwy.

Flip Fisher, owner of Whitley Drugs

Joining the exodus of merchants and other tenants ahead of a bulldozer, Whitley Drugs has moved across and down the street.

“We moved the remodel we did five years ago,” owner Flip Fisher said. The new space is about the same as the old with about the same number of parking spaces, though “it’s certainly easier to get into and out of.”
The bigger change is so new no one’s used it yet.
“We’ve got a drive-thru,” the pharmacist said. “We finally joined the 20th century.”
Whitley Drugs — motto: “Famous for Service Since 1955” — was started by a druggist everyone called Dr. Whitley — even Fisher doesn’t know a first name other than “Doc.” In 1957, the pharmacy moved from Seventh Avenue to a new strip center John Atha had built on Greenville Highway.
Fisher, Atha Plaza owner Larry Baber and Jack Romer, who runs Economy Drugs on Fifth Avenue, were partners until Baber retired. Now the stores are owned by Fisher, Romer and Dan Butts.
Atha Plaza is expected to be cleared for a Publix. Whitley Drugs joins BoKaye’s cards and gifts and Fish & Pets in relocating. El Paso restaurant is moving to the old Quincy’s building on Spartanburg Highway. Whitley Drugs, now at 814 Greenville Highway just south of the old Food Lion, has the same hours and staff that it had in Atha Plaza. Fisher, 63, said he considered retiring for about five minutes. “The staff is too good,” he said. Plus he’s got that modern drive-thru to celebrate.
