NWS issues flash flood watch

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for the mountains Tuesday as a rain system continued to blanket the region. Forecasters said there was a 90 percent chance of rain today with additional accumulation of up to an inch by Wednesday morning.

“A persistent easterly low level flow is expected to result in increasing coverage of moderate to heavy rain showers across the area through the morning,” the NWS said. “Rainfall rates with some of these showers could be enough to produce flash flooding...especially in locations near the Blue Ridge escarpment that have seen heavy rainfall since late last week.”
That includes southern and eastern Henderson County, which has seen the heaviest rainfall totals since a plume of tropical moisture moved into the mountains Thursday night. Creeks and streams and poorly draining areas in cities may flood, the NWS said. The flash flood watch remains in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The forecast calls for showers and possible thundershowers today until 2 p.m. with a high near 70. Rain chance drops to 50 percent on Wednesday and Thursday, 40 percent on Friday and 30 percent Saturday before the first real clear-up and nice weather on Sunday, which should be mostly sunny with a high of 65.
