LOCAL BRIEFS: Ladies Aid Society, piano performance at BRCC

Ladies Aid Society makes donations

The Ladies Aid Society of Flat Rock presented checks to two organizations recently. The donations were part of the 2015 total distribution to local nonprofits of $16,000 raised through sales at The Book Exchange, member dues, donations and fundraisers. The society donated $1,500 to Children and Family Resource Center for its Adolescent Parenting Program. AARP Tax-Aide seeks volunteers

The Henderson County AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program is looking for volunteers for the upcoming 2015 season. Volunteers are needed for this free program to help low to middle income taxpayers, especially seniors, prepare and file taxes. This is a free service. It operates from two locations in Henderson County.
Experience isn’t necessary. Leaders will train volunteers on the latest tax preparation, forms and software. An information meeting for prospective volunteers will be held in the Kaplan Auditorium of the Henderson County Library at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22. John McCutcheon performs at Trinity

John McCutcheon will perform at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville on Nov. 6 for the Project We Care organization. Ticketing information is available at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2074727
Wisconsin-bred and Georgia-based, McCutcheon is folk music’s Renaissance man — master instrumentalist, powerful singer-songwriter, storyteller, activist, and author.
As an instrumentalist, he is a master of a dozen different traditional instruments. His songwriting has been hailed by critics and singers around the globe. His 30-plus recordings have garnered every imaginable honor including seven Grammy nominations. McCutcheon’s commitment to grassroots political organizations has put him on the front lines of many of the issues important to communities and workers. This year on May 1, the day recognized as Labor Day in most countries outside of the United States, he released “Joe Hill’s Last Will” which pays homage to the songs of the late Swedish American musician and labor organizer who was put to death 100 years ago.

Duke Energy donates $3,300 to Hands On!


Hands On!, the children’s museum on Main Street in Hendersonville, received a $3,300 donation from Duke Energy to support a program that brings a Makerspace to the museum’s STEAM Room (Science Technology Engineering Art Math). Makerspaces are part of a growing movement of hands-on mentor-led learning environments to make and remake the physical and digital worlds. They foster experimentation, invention, creation, and exploration through design and project-based learning. This is the third year Duke Energy has supported Hands On!, donating a total of $8,600.


Guest pianist plays Gershwin at BRCC


The Blue Ridge Community College Concert Series will feature pianist Yun-Ling Hsu on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Thomas Auditorium. In addition to her performance of piano transcriptions of Gershwin songs (The Man I Love, Fascinating Rhythm, Embraceable You, and I Got Rhythm), Dr. Hsu will be joined by Cuban pianist Ana Rosa Hernandez for a delightful evening of works written for four hands.
A native of Taiwan, Republic of China, Yun-Ling Hsu is coordinator of Piano Studies at the University of Central Florida. She holds piano performance degrees from Ohio State University and Tainan Woman’s College of Arts and Technology in Taiwan. Dr. Hsu has performed solo and chamber music recitals with many notable musicians worldwide. Ana Rosa Hernandez, a native of Cuba, attended the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, and received her Masters degree in piano performance at the University of Central Florida. She has won several piano competitions in Cuba and abroad.
Admission to the concert is $10, payable at the door; admission for students is $5.

John Hood will speak on Jim Martin biography

Guest speaker John Hood of the John Locke Foundation, TV and radio commentator and a syndicated columnist, and guest, former Gov. Jim Martin, will appear at the Henderson County Republican Women’s Club luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 27 at the Cedars.
Hood will discuss his new biography of former Gov. Martin, a Davidson College chemist who was elected to Congress and then became governor of North Carolina.
All registered Republicans are invited. Cost is $20 for non-members and $14 for members. Check must be in by Oct. 22 to confirm reservations and should be made payable to HCRWC Luncheon and mailed to P.O. Box 2734, Hendersonville, NC 28793.

Kids can enter 4-H Bake-Off


The Cooperative Extension Service is inviting children to enter the 4-H Bake-Off. To compete children and teens, ages 5 to 18, choose a recipe and bake it at home. Baked goods are then brought to the Bake-Off site, where judges will taste all the entries. The event is Saturday, Nov. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church.
While the entries are being judged, youth participate in a cookie and craft workshop, baking gingerbread cookies for a local food pantry and making decorations and tray favors for a nursing home. Everyone who enters the Bake-Off receives recognition, and winners receive ribbons and monetary awards.
