City unveils winning recycling insignia

Sydney Cain drew the winning image for Hendersonville recycling.

Hendersonville City Manager John Connet said city employees were sitting in an office talking about ways to publicize the city's recycling effort when a recycling truck passed by. It had a big white space on the side. A blank slate was born.

The city Environmental Sustainability Board held a contest to fill the white space with a new logo celebrating recycling.

"It took two years but we got it done," said David Rhodes, a Hendersonville High School senior who is on the advisory board.

The winner was Sydney Cain, a junior at North Henderson High School. She was recognized Friday afternoon during the official unveiling of the logo.

"I was inspired by pictures me and my friends were taking," she said. "I thought it represented the cause pretty well because we want to love the earth."

Her winning image shows hands encircling the earth. "Love Our World," it says. "Hendersonville Recyling Works."

Cain's chorus teacher, Richard Cagle, knew of her talent as an artist. "I would stop bugging her to enter the contest," he said. "She said 'I'll think about it' and I said, 'You will enter it.' I think she drew it in about a day."

The runnerup was Shantia Philpart and third place winner was Kolin Dirks.
