Henderson Oil President Bill McKibbin and Vice President/General Manager Barry Edwards presented a check for $1,500 to Joshua Christ, CEO of the Daniel Boone Council. The $1,500 Citgo grant was used to support the council’s University of Scouting on Nov. 14, an all-day adult leader training event covering in various areas of the Scouting program, and their Be Prepared 15k, a trail race at Camp Daniel Boone on Dec. 6. Henderson Oil also contributed and secured other donations to help with the events, bringing the total value of the sponsorship to over $2,500 in support of Scouting.

YMCA teaches water safety to club members

The Hendersonville Family YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County have launched a pilot program that offers water safety lessons and pool-time fun to Boys & Girls Club members this week.
The Hendersonville Family YMCA is giving some 100 kindergarten through fifth grade Club members an age-appropriate water safety lesson followed by time to play in the pool, all under the watchful eyes of Y lifeguards and Boys & Girls Club staffers.
“In addition to being fun, this experience will also help Club kids become safer when they’re in the water, said Julia Hockenberry, assistant executive director of the Boys & Girls Club. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to join forces.”
The pilot was created to meet the needs of children who attend schools with year-round calendars. These students start their school year in July and often miss out on summertime swimming opportunities. The Boys & Girls Club and the Y want to ensure these children benefit from this enriching activity. The program will host Club members from Bruce Drysdale and Hendersonville elementary schools.
