Jones to retire as schools superintendent

David L. Jones will retire as Henderson County schools superintendent on July 1.

Henderson County Public Schools Superintendent David L. Jones has announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2015-2016 school year, effective July 1, after nearly four decades of service.

“During my 38 years with Henderson County Public Schools, I have had the opportunity to work as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, central office administrator and superintendent,” Jones said in a news release issued Tuesday. “I am very grateful to the people who believed in me and gave me a variety of opportunities to teach, work and lead in our school district.”
An Edneyville native and graduate of Edneyville High School, Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Intermediate Education and K-12 Art from Mars Hill College. Jones was hired by Henderson County Schools as a teacher and coach, first at the old East Flat Rock Elementary school and then at his high school alma mater, where he coached the boys basketball team to a state championship in 1984.
Jones served two years as assistant principal of Rugby Junior High beginning in 1988 and served as principal at Flat Rock Junior High from 1990 to 1997 moving to the central office.
Before being appointed superintendent in 2010, Jones served as associate superintendent, assistant superintendent for personnel services, senior director of accountability and facility management and director of testing and accountability.
“In each role, I’ve enjoyed working with students and staff for the advancement of public education in our communities,” Jones said.
Jones was named the 2012 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year by the N.C. School Community Health Alliance and in 2014 was named the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Superintendent of the Year.
“I leave with wonderful memories and have been blessed to work with so many outstanding educators and board members, and am thankful for all the parents and community leaders for their partnership and support over the years,” he said.
