Restaurant roundup: Brandy's taking Square Root space

The 100 block of South Main Street in Hendersonville is a neglected spot no more. Once a frontier that drew little foot traffic, the block is lively now thanks to pioneers like West First and the Poe House. Never Blue and Jonga Java benefit from the Flat Rock Playhouse Downtown.

The space at 111 S. Main St. was home to Gypsy Cab and two Squares in a row — Square One Bistro and Square Root. Executive chef and owner Adam Wilson has retreated to his original Brevard restaurant. He closed the Square Root, for family reasons, and said he is looking forward to serving loyal patrons at his Square Root in Brevard.
In its place, a family that has run a restaurant in Florida for 30 years plans to open Brandy’s, offering a wide variety of seafood, steaks, appetizers and salads.
Ken Gaylord, owner of the historic building, confirmed that a new tenant was moving in but said the lease would not be finalized until later this week.
Brandy’s posted a menu the board outside the restaurant and a help wanted sign on the window. The menu offers appetizers that included a Bavarian pretzel for $7, Lobster Bacall ($13), crab cake ($11) and Heidi Hodie house chips topped with Maytag blue cheese sauce, parmesan and scallions ($7). The soup and salad menu includes French onion soup ($7), New England clam chowder ($5 and $7) and Caesar salad ($7). Seafood includes Sunburst Farm trout ($23), paella with lobster, mussels, shrimp, scallops, fish, chicken and tasso sausage over saffron rice ($25). The restaurant will serve six different steaks, from the Brandy, a 14-ounce ribeye for $34, to the Humphrey Bogart, a 12-ounce New York strip for $29 and the Michael Jordan, filet mignon medallions topped with lumped crab meat for $28. An added steak lovers bonus is six kinds of sauce and butter: Béarnaise, Maytag blue cheese, truffle butter, Fontina cheese sauce, green peppercorn sauce au poirve and brandied garlic butter.
Lighter fare includes a Caesar salad topped with salmon, shrimp or chicken ($19), shrimp or lobster mac’n’cheese ($17) and Scallops Rembrandt with peppers, onions and fettuccine in a brandied teriyaki sauce ($18).
