New acts, old favorites highlight Rhythm & Brews season

Caitlin Krisko and The Broadcast, which performed in 2013 and 2014, return for the 2016 season.

A brass and rhythm ensemble, an award-winning bluegrass band, the popular Mountain Heart, The Broadcast from the inaugural season and an afro-pop/indie  band will headline the shows in the fourth annual Rhythm & Brews concert series in downtown Hendersonville May through September.

Beginning in May and running through September, the concert series now in its fourth year is moving to South Main Street, where it will take up two blocks. Concert dates are May 19, June 16, July 21, Aug. 18 and Sept. 15. The shows  feature local singer songwriters and opening acts at 5 and 6 with headliners performing from 7 to 9 p.m.

Here's a rundown of the headliners:

May 19: The eight-piece ensemble Major and the Monbacks from Norfolk, Va., feature a lively horn and powerful rhythm section that merges retro 60’s rock and roll with the high energy and horn laden grit of southern soul.

June 16: Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time is a bluegrass legend recently nominated for “Recorded Event of the Year” by the International Bluegrass Music Association for its “Against the Grain” record featuring Garth Brooks.

July 21: The Broadcast kicked off the first Rhythm & Brews show in May 2013 and will return with a hard-driving Grace Slick meets Led Zeppelin sound. Breaking new ground with an infectious energy and authentic approach to rock & roll, the Broadcast features dynamic vocalist Caitlin Krisko.

Aug. 18: Another Rhythm & Brews favorite, Mountain Heart, returns for a second straight year after packing the Azalea lot space last summer. Fearlessly revolutionizing the way acoustic music can be presented and played, Mountain Heart has become synonymous with cutting-edge excellence in acoustic music since the group was created in 1999.

Sept. 15: The Hip Abduction, a sextet hailing from St. Petersburg, Fla., is an afro-pop/indie rock band that mixes reggae bass lines with traditional African stringed instruments for a funky high energy performance. With a breezy, good time groove-and-sway sound, the band mixes reggae, roots, funk and Afro-beat into an intoxicating brew.

The shows will once again feature local craft beer from Henderson County’s own Sierra Nevada and Southern Appalachian Breweries and wine and hard cider from Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, Flat Rock Ciderworks and Bold Rock Cider!

A family friendly event the HandsOn! Family Zone, a kid friendly destination within the show, and the Pardee misting tent will once again provide entertainment and a cool-off. For more information visit www.downtownhendersonville.org.
